My entire life I was told I was 100% German descent. Everyone WE knew of lived in or immigrated from Germany. We have always identified with the German culture in customs.. whether it be on Holidays, or religious ceremonies.. etc.. NOW.. I have learned that I am hardly 100% anything.. and the Heritage differs greatly from ancestry. Apparently, my DNA has migrated all around Europe before ending up in me.

I am also 6% Irish 1% Danish and less than 1% Russian. Fascinating.

A mutt like me! Problem with genealogy is that people only follow the male line when the females are a mix of other nationalities.

None of us are pure anything, as we have genes going all the way back to the first fish in the sea...

I also think that many hundreds of years ago.. in the early centuries, when boarders didn't exist.. people migrated all around Europe.. The Anglos....The Saxons... the Vikings, Normans.. All Raping and Pillaging as they traveled.. So the DNA make-up of all Europeans will be much like ours... mixed. Remember.. this is actual DNA.. not heritage..

My hubby got his results too... Very much like mine... 100% European, only heavier on the Eastern European side. which may explain some of his features. What has him bummed out is that all his life his mother told him she was half American Indian.. Cherokee.. Guess what... Not a drop of Native American DNA in his body. 0%.. Guess mamma liked to tell stories.. On the other hand.. the Cherokee tribe was notorious for granting tribal membership to the Europeans who helped them along the way, so maybe this is where her family folklore came into play.. BUT Genetically.. He is not a Native American..

Yes, and our relatives tell us we are a % of this or that and we believe them. Like my grandmother who said she was 100% English when her family actually went all the way back to the war of independence. She just didn't like the Irish or Scots and thought English was superior. Ha! Sorry granny!

I was amazed when watching a documentary on the Celts that they came from all over Europe. We think of Celts as Irish, Scottish, Welsh, or from Brittany. Actually these are just the places that retained Celtic culture. The word Celt came from the Romans who called these people Keltoi.

Even my husband says it's too simplistic to say he is Scottish/Irish/Viking. He knows he's Scottish, of course, but also his grandfather immigrated from Ireland, and there's also Irish on the other side. He knows he's got Viking blood because he has a hand issue (as do 3 of his brothers) that are almost certainly a disease only known to Vikings.

I considered one of those tests for Sophie at one time. My Dad traced our human family years ago before computers and DNA. It seems all the original family popped up from close areas in Wales. Good enough for me. Eventually I didn't test Sophie either. Too many variables, first off there is no pure breed pit bull. They are a conglomeration of a whole bunch of other breeds.

Guessing by appearance she is probably American Staffordshire, with a dash of German Shepherd and a quarter cup of Boxer. It would be funny if a DNA test came out with Pomeranian and Chow in there too.;)

So, when we speak of DNA, it really doesn't refer to nationality per se. It refers more to region. My grandfather was born in Poland but who knows, maybe his grandparents came from Russia or even France. I understand that there is a fairly accepted theory that we all once came from Africa. I'm wondering if they could be or anyone alive today, 100% native? All those "parts" they describe is proof people did move around quite a bit.

I doubt if there are any "Pure" race or region people on the earth. Maybe some remote isolated tribe somewhere. I think we should remember that countries and boundaries of countries are a fairly recent thing and they are all political. So the "Region" is more important and as you say, proof that humans migrated a lot

Well, mine showed 2.7% Neanderthal. The balance all Northern European. I'd have to go back to look up the parts of that.
