My ideal vacation isn't London New York or Paris but this place!

Yeah, reminds me of the sky at our cabin

Similar to Gary's experience, although not all year long, the cottage in Maine is in a remote area and at night there's not a light to be seen. We're usually there for 2 or 3 months each year but I cherish the silence during the day and night and the total darkness at night, only "disturbed" by the loons on the pond, and unfortunately that only on scattered occasions. Love to listen to them yodel.

For my money, anyplace away from people is the ideal vacation but for some people the silence and remoteness is off-putting. It would seem as though the bigger the crowds the better they like it, cruises being a good example. And please, not bashing cruises, tours, or similar ventures, just my own personal view.

Nighttime in Colorado is a great place to view the stars, especially in the mountains, where the air is clear, and the air pollution is far away. I remember, years ago, going up to the top of Mount Evans....over 14,000 ft....and viewing the Milky Way from there. It was so clear that I felt like I was almost in orbit.

I live in Northeast PA. It's very woodsy. It does not compete with Colorado. My brother lives in Massachusetts, on a hill. One side of the hill is a huge shopping center with store after store, the other side is a huge interchange of State Turnpike & US Interstates., with motel after motel. He doesn't see any stars at all. When my brother visits me, all he wants to do is sit out ,and watch the sky at night. He probably wouldn't ever leave Colorado.

What a beautiful sight ... thanks for the video Barney.
you're welcome isn't that something? Too beautiful for words. You know in the past when I would see photos of nebulous night skies I thought it was photographic special effects. I realize now it's all real. Spread out across the night expanse for us to see. I can't wait until the day I can see this in person.

:)

We've been to the McDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains of Texas for a star party. Ft. Davis is an official Dark Skies region and it's fabulous at night. We even saw a shooting star during the presentation. Unforgettable!
