My iPhone Took a Bath

On Thursday morning while having my shower and listening to a podcast, I heard a plunk and the chat was somewhat muffled. Logic said that it had fallen onto the towel. Rather than get water all over the floor, I waited for about five minutes until I was done to check it out. It took me a few seconds to find it - in the toilet. The lid was closed. It slid between the bowl and the seat at the back. Good thing the bowl had just been scrubbed the day before.

I searched for answers online. An iphone reportedly is good for 30 minutes in water. Rice is a no no. Too much chance of dust settling in. Keep it away from heat, hair dryers, etc. I removed the $2 plastic case, dried it as best possible and set it on a fluffy cloth and propped it up at different angles throughout the day. This morning was over 48 hours so I plugged it in to charge. If there’s moisture, you’ll get a warning. It’s finished charging and things look ok for now. Knock on wood.

I don’t know how much damage can happen to the SIM card.
 

The only one we had drop in water was just a momentary drop....it was 'toast'! The electrical circuits short out instantaneously if the power is on...
they are not made to be waterproof, from what I know...

They aren’t waterproof, but are water resistant. Mine is a 12 Pro and the following seems to apply.

The iPhone 13 is water-resistant. It has a rating of “IP68” which means it's fully protected from dust and can handle being underwater for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 6 meters. If your phone gets dropped in a puddle, or a shallow pool, or gets wet from the rain, it will be just fine.

Considering how many hits I got when I googled this topic, it must be common.

I missed the part about turning it off and it was on all day and everything appeared to be functioning. I didn’t use any of the apps because my power wasn’t at 100% and I didn’t want to run it down. Glad no one called me that day. I used my iPad to text.

I have the Iphone 12 Pro as well.. so I'll keep all this in mind should I ever drop mine in water..

Put your phone in a bag of rice for at least 12 hours. In a seal - able pleastic freezer bag. Don’t turn it on for 24 hours. Even if it work, I’d put the phone in a ‘sealed’
bag of rice overnight.

This is contrary to logic now. Too much dust can go into the small parts. It’s almost 60 hours now and the phone has been working all along. It’s recharged and seems to be working fine. If this happens to anyone else, read all the advice from your phone manufacturer. That’s the best source for facts.

Well that makes logical sense. We put my phone on top of a bowl of rice and put plastic on top. I think it would have started up without doing that since it was a waterproof phone with a waterproof cover BUT it’s always best to follow manufacturers directions. Luckily my husband knows more than they do. Lol 😝 ( obviously kidding )

I’ve done that to my phone and it almost feels like i just lost my whole life.
 
As someone with a career in hardware electronics, if electronic devices fall into water, conductive electrolytes in the water may cause a reduction in resistances and impedance between conductive elements as component leads and circuit traces, that then can cause failures. Fortunately most printed circuit boards during manufacturing are coated with thin non-conducting films that help prevent minor cross coupling. Actually many printed circuit boards use pure water in manufacturing cleaning processes.

For devices falling into water, I'll suggest first evaluating whether water actually had enough time to get inside seals and casings. If not you may be lucky just to allow drying with a hair drier. If water did get inside, merely powering it up could destroy some components. So buy a gallon of distilled purified water. Try to open the device so the electronics are exposed. While wearing plastic gloves, place it under that water in a container while shaking it about. Remove the device and use a hair drier to help dry it out. After letting it sit in dry air for several hours, then try turning it on to see if it still is functional.
 
Years ago when my late husband and I were traveling in our fifth-wheel, we were staying close to his mother's so we took laundry to do at her house. I guess I had set our cell phone on top of the laundry and it must have gotten covered up somehow so in the washer it went. When I called Verizon, the guy just laughed. He said he'd heard all kinds of stories. They sent us a new phone.
