My Stove Went Kaplowey -- Meal Ideas?

Just like that, with pasta on the boil, sauce in another pan, chicken in the skillet and rolls in the oven I noticed things weren't cooking very fast, I kept turning up the heat and finally I realized the clock was out and the whole thing had just quit. Abuse an appliance for eighteen years and what do you get?

So now what? I think it was the last "biscuit" colored electric range. I've recently replaced the dishwasher and refrigerator with white appliances that are terrible, (the cartons in the freezer get soggy and the dishes come out soaking wet.) I think the suppliers are punishing those of us who don't buy stainless.

So, in short, I'm not in the mood to buy a new range and wonder just how long I can cook meals for three adults in the microwave. Last night we had crackers, cheese and apple slices and we were bragging about how that was all we needed, but I noticed we hit the snack hour extra hard.

Microwave meal ideas? I have a freezer full of salmon and cod that I'm used to baking.

do you have a crock pot or a insta pot type pressure cooker .......even air fryers ..... we cooked almost everything in our air fryer for months...
you can bake and many things in pressure cooker types although i was not good at it.

Jeni mentioned air fryers. If you have a Costco or Target, pop down there and get an air fryer.

The only thing with air fryers, though, is that they're set up to remove all the fat from the meat ... so you don't get the deliciousness that fat brings. Unless you spoon it on.

There are also toaster ovens.

Give them all a look. You could be up and cooking far sooner than ordering/installing a new stove.

My old black stove, which came with the house, is better than anything currently on the market. When we had the thermostat replace the service person said those old mother boards are hard to find.
Do you have an electric hot plate? I need to get one, so any recommendations are welcome. We have an electric water kettle and really like it because it is fast. Trader Joe's has a fairly tasty microwavable frozen food selection also.

Salmon and cod would be fine in the microwave; some butter, lemon and dill.

Steam potatoes in a pie plate with about 2 inches of water, or make rice. Any frozen veg can be microwaved.

Meats on your outdoor grill w/ corn on the cob, wide-sliced red peppers, asparagus....
Thank s Rose. I always use the microwave for frozen veg but never tried it for fish and I was afraid the rice wouldn't be right.
Love main dish salads, with onions, sliced meats and cheeses.
I love that too and we've been having a huge salad and microwave potatoes once a week this summer, but I know the men folk don't love it as much as I do. They're both around 6'4"240 pounds -- they Eat.

Did you check the breaker?
It's 20 amp
Maybe the box needs a boost in amps (?)
I'm not sure what any of that means, Gary, but hubs (who is only slightly more handy than I am) went out and flipped the dohicky in the fuse box and we had a loud bang in the kitchen and sparks flew up from the outlet which is now black. Could you come over?

Y'all, I don't have an outdoor grill, electric skillet, crock pot, instapot, air fryer, or toaster oven, hot plate or electric kettle. I didn't realize what a deprived kitchen I had until right now.

I really, really like that ice cream idea today.

From my husband. The stove probably went off because of a short. When the doohickey was flipped it went back on. This is bad. Get an electrician.

An electric range is normally on a 50 amp 240V breaker. I would check that the leads going into the breaker are tight, then turn off the main breaker and pull the stove breaker from the panel, and check the contacts on the panel/breaker for corrosion/erosion. They have changed to a new style panel in the last few years due to problems like this. Also check the connections in the wall receptical to make sure they are tight. The male plug is normally a molded plug, so non serviceable.

I love the rice cooker. It doesn't take up much space, is easy to clean, and doesn't need to be watched at all.
And people can fill up on the many things one can cook in it.

But it's electric, so I think I would have your place checked out by one of those specialists, first!

Solid info

Heh, I usually check with my electrician buddy
If it's too involved, he's paying a visit

After a week of BLT's, salads and Chinese take-away, I finally made a real meal in the microwave of salmon, broccoli and rice. I was worried about the rice, the recipe online said use 1&1/2 cups rice to only 2&1/4 cup water, rather than the 3 cups I would have used on the stove, but it came out great, everything did. I just didn't like not having everything get done at once.

We still haven't got up the nerve to call an electrician, but it's nice to finally learn how to make more things in the microwave. The bacon is delicious.

How was the salmon, @Della ?
Fascinating to hear your update, and the results on the rice, too.
I have had broccoli and the like, made that way, and it was very good, too.
I might manage to cook fresh salmon that way, and it is one of few foods I can still eat.

I have a Cuisinart convection/ air fryer/ toaster. You can do more with it that you would ever imagine. Amazon has the from $100 compact to $200 supersize. That's all I have used for almost two years. Come with a great cookbook. You can view the cookbook online at the Cuisinart site. Best to you all.

If your stove is 18 years old, there's a pretty good chance it has reached its "end of life"....it's rare to have an appliance last that long anymore. There could be a problem with your electrical hookup, but if a simple voltage check at the plug shows 240 volts, its probably ok. We've had to replace all of our appliances in the past 5 or 6 years. The only Old thing we have left is a Montgomery Ward chest freezer in the basement that we bought 50 years ago...and is still working good.....they don't make things like that anymore.

I have no advice Della since I'm a lousy cook but I believe the things they make nowadays are built to be lousy and not last. It's just to make more money. :(

You can do nachos and things like that in the microwave. Even I can make those. :ROFLMAO:

Ta da! After six weeks we have a new stainless steel electric stove. Pretty! It took us that long to make ourselves go shopping. Meanwhile I learned how to cook many more things in the microwave, so there was no rush.

I didn't want to buy a lot of things that would clutter up the counter space after the new stove arrived and we no longer needed it, but I did break down and buy a nineteen dollar electric skillet so we could have fried eggs and my vegan son's favorite zucchini skillet dish. Even at $19, I thought it was a waste of money. It seemed to have two heats, scorching and off. That will be going to the local free store place tomorrow.

Because the rest of our appliances are white and not working terribly well we went to H*me Dep*t ready to get a group deal on stainless stove, fridge, microwave and dishwasher. Unfortunately, although no other customers were around, our clerk kept wandering off and was never there to help us find things or answer questions. So we gave up and just bought the stove and we will probably wait for the other things to fail one by one.

What ever happened to aggressive pushy sales people?

What we couldn't have for six weeks: Pasta, casseroles, baked plant based fake things my son eats, macaroni and cheese, cookies, peach cobbler, and ... Boiled corn on the cob! This is one of the main perks of living in Ohio and we hated to miss most of the season.

We're going to eat all that soon and appreciate being able to serve everything hot at once.
