My trip to the petting zoo was supposed to cheer me up ... but ....

As I posted in the pet forum , I had to put my 11 year old dog,Poppy,to sleep Saturday morning. I was inconsolable on Sat & Sun , so I thought a trip to the petting zoo on Monday might help me take my mind off of it. I dumped 2 pounds of baby carrots in my purse to feed my favorite 3 camels. They're big beggars and so sweet ...... but one decided I shouldn't be feeding the camel next to him . He grabbed my upper arm in his teeth and yanked me toward him ,lifting me in the air and into the fence ! He definitely got my attention ( and the carrot out of my hand) all for himself ! I yelled but nobody even looked ! I ended up with a 2 inch bloody scrape on my arm -- teeth marks on the top and bottom of my upper arm that turned into one mass horrible purple & blue bruise ! We were just leaving anyway , so when I got home I dumped peroxide on it and iced it down. I'm fine - and now I'm laughing about it . :p That definitely took my mind off of my dog , that's for sure !

PS ..... I didn't want to report it to the zoo staff ....... I can't imagine the can of legal worms that I might open !

:eek:mg1: Glad you're okay, but I think you should report it. I'm SHOCKED no one came to help you!
A shame your visit to petting zoo was spoiled. BAD CAMEL!

I would report it also. If it's a petting zoo that means children are there. You were lucky without getting too hurt but a small child might end up differently.

That's terrible about the camel, those animals must get pretty stressed with so many people around them daily, the zoo caretakers should notice changes in behavior and someone should have come to your aid immediately. Like CeeCee said, the injury to a young child might have been far more serious. Worst experience I had in a petting zoo was a small llama that was insistent on going after the back tie of my halter top, I had to hide behind my husband to get him to stop trying to bite it. Glad your laughing about it now. :love_heart:

Is feeding the animals allowed? If so, you should report it. This camel will do it again.

I'm so sorry you were injured this way. I hope you heal quickly. :love_heart:

I am surprised that they had camels in an area where people (and possibly little kids) might be feeding them. Camels are well-known for having a terrible disposition, and the people who work with them are very careful because camels will attack with the slightest provocation.
Llamas are usually pretty friendly, although they can also be standoffish. They are also very smart; so the one that was after your halter top was probably just trying to play with you, Seabreeze. None of the llamas that I have had ever even looked like they might bite, but if they are provoked or teased, they will spit at you.
Mine was very sociable , and I don’t ever remember seeing him spit at anything. My granddaughter loved to have me put her
on Gilligan and take her for a ride around the yard when she was young, and they came to visit us.

I'm sure he was just being playful, but I wasn't sure. Great photo of you and your Granddaughter HFL, you were blessed to be around animals so much in your life. :)

Yeah, I've never seen camels in a petting zoo, either. I haven't been to a lot of them, but seems unusual to me. Remember that one the next time....zero carrots for him! Glad you're ok.

Are you allowed to feed animals in a petting zoo.? I hardly think camels are the petting type. They are huge.

At the few I've been to you can buy a little cup of grain or whatever. But the first goat you run into steals it all every time...you're better off tossing your quarter in the pond and making a wish (for no more goats at the petting zoo).

I'm so glad you are ok. I'm not siding with the camel but sometimes all it takes is a complaint and they put the animal down when all he really wanted was the carrots. In this area you can't bring in food for the animals.

I was at a dock in Florida. There were jacks swimming around and the people feed them. They hang around there because that's where they clean the fish and throw the scraps in after fishing.

Anyway they sell bags of dried small fish to feed them.

As I was walking toward the dock, this big Pelican came and snatched it out of my hand. Everyone was laughing. You are supposed to hide it. Those pelicans can be vicious as well as can all animals and birds when it comes to food.
