Nasal Surgery Experience

I had Nose Surgery on 12-Apr-22 and thought I would get feedback from others; and offer up my experience for anyone who may be considering having it done.

I had the following done:
1. Nasal Septoplasty

2. Submucous Resection Turbinate

3. Repair Nasal Vestibular Stenosis

I had Stents and Packing in. Have been having to Saline Rinse every few hours since the surgery. Face is sore and surprisingly teeth have hurt - but this is common due to nerves being bruised per the ENT. Have had headache basically since the surgery.

The Stents and Packing were / are supposed to be in for a week.

But on day 2 after the surgery - I sneezed wrong and blew the Stents and Packing completely out of my nose. Not good... ha ! The Stents were/are 3-1/2" Long and the Packing was also.
Went to the ENT the next morning and he said to be careful and rinse regular. He said that this has only happened twice in over 30 year.

I think maybe that I might have been Allergic to the material of the Stents and/or packing as I was sneezing alot and you have to sneeze thru your mouth.

The only reason I had the surgeries done was because I had to start wearing a CPAP machine after a Heart Surgery in January.

Went to ENT and he was surprised I was able to breath thru my nose much at all as it was really messed up due to trauma.

Turns out that as kids from about age 6 to 13 we played real rough. I got my Nose and Face hit alot and had many Bent and I guess broken noses and some of the baby teeth knocked out. I would just bleed alot and keep playing. It was just how we played. I had to get my Nose Cauterized a few times as it would not quit bleeding.

I find it amusing that for 55 years or so, that I was used to breathing the way I did because that was all I knew.

The ENT says that i will be able to breath much better and that Sinus stuffiness and Colds should be reduced by alot once I am healed up.

So I am hopeful that the surgeries and the pain and uncomfortable aspects of healing will be all worthwhile in a few weeks.

Now at almost 2 weeks post op - it is much better. But still having to do Saline Rinses but not as much. Headaches and teeth aches have reduced but are still present. The ENT said it takes time to heal and all of this is normal.

I will post back with status.

I've always wondered what was involved with nasal surgery. Does not sound very pleasant - however, hopefully worth going through.

All the best with healing.

I had nasal surgery when I was younger. Like you, we rough-housed and I got hit often so that I messed up the inner workings of my nose. It led to sinus infections and other facial pain later in life.

I was a busy mother so I didn't do the saline washes as much as I should have and the doc scolded me for it when it was time to have packing removed. I told him to just pull the damn stuff out and quit being so squeamish about it.

Yes it hurt, and I had a moaning session, but the surgery helped a lot. No more sinus infections. I was satisfied and so was the doctor. Hope you recover soon.

Wow, you have been through so much even before the nasal surgery, I feel for you. I really hope the result is positive and your breathing greatly improves, also the pain and soreness is short lived and you can feel better again. Please take care and keep your positive attitude.

2-May-22 Follow Up

Went to the ENT today for follow up visit since surgery on 12-Apr-22. I have been doing the Saline Rinses 4 to 6 times per day. I have very carefully been putting Vaseline mixed with some Baby Oil in the Nostrils to help with the dryness of the damaged area's scabbing up and being very bothersome.

Still have abit of a headache - and have since awakening from the surgery - but it is declining in intensity and just about gone.

Nose is still very tender but not nearly as sore as it was.

The ENT Doc was very pleased and said the healing and recovery is excellent. He said he was worried as I had so much wrong that he was afraid I might have a hole due to all the stuff he had to do but that all is OK. He said that I was almost blocked off totally on the one side and pretty blocked on the other..... For ~55 year I was just used to that.

The Doc said that my breathing is excellent now and I should see a significant decrease in Colds and Sinus Infections.

Thank Goodness !
Doc said to keep up with the Saline Rinses for another month at least and to come see him in a month.

I can now tell a noticeable difference in breathing. Especially at night.

The Doc said that I may not need the CPAP machine that I have been on since the Heart Ablation Surgery in January for High/Fast Heart Rate and Fluttering.
It would be great to get off the CPAP machine.
I will not start back on the CPAP machine until next ENT Doc visit as I am still too sore.

Would I recommend folks to get this done?

Hard to say at this point as I am still very sore and raw from the surgery. But I think so as I can breath much easier. The ENT Doc keeps saying I will be glad i did it.
It is a uncomfortable procedure and the recovery is not alot of fun.

Doc told me and ms gamboolgal to get back go walking and exercising - so that is a good thing.

I will post back after next month with status and thoughts.

Oh gosh, that has been so much for you to go through....

I hope you will find yourself very much better, in multiple ways,
very soon after this!

Thank you for sharing about it with us, too. I have a lot of difficulty with my nose as well, and it's good to get some first-hand information.

Just had dental surgery...not fun

Not familiar with nasal surgery, but my best wishes for a speedy recovery.
