Way back in the way back, when I was a kid, a really big treat was nutcracker and a sack of nuts to shell. We always had plenty at Christmastime.
I saw some in a store the other day and commented on how we looked forward to those nuts. My DD asked "why would you do that when you can get them shelled"?

We always had a big bowl of mixed nuts for Thanksgiving that none of us paid much attention to.
After Thanksgiving we were all pressed into service to crack them for Christmas cookies.
