National Oyster Day - August 5th

We always used to have a 9"x13" dish of scalloped oysters on Thanksgiving. I remember the oysters used to come to the corner store in one-gallon gold-colored cans similar to a paint can. The meat man would dip a cup or a pint out into a white cardboard Chinese food container with a wire handle but on Thanksgiving, we used to take a half can.

I used to eat raw oysters years ago but with the pollution going on in our oceans, I won't eat them raw anymore. I haven't had a fried oyster in years either. We just don't see them around anymore like we used to.
We don’t eat fish anymore rose, because , of what they feed on at the bottom of the oceans yuk
So sad ......

oysters are an item on my very short list of foods i just do not like. have tried them every which way... raw, in stew, fried, grilled, baked, broiled. just don't care for them

Yes, oysters are filter filter feeders and can pick up a lot of things. We stopped taking them from Tampa Bay when water testing started, sewage was being dumped not too far from where we got ours... Don't think we ever got sick as a result, but we were probably lucky, or maybe had built up immunity or something...

Anyway I no longer eat them raw, not very often anyway, only on special occasions. I do still like them fried. Instead of raw I like to put the shells on the bbq, they open as heated and the oysters kind of steamed. Not quite as good as raw, but close enough. Have not taken my own in years, just buy them now.
