National Smile Power Day - June 15th

Being able to easily smile when meeting others is a skill that with repetition over time becomes natural. Most sales persons and those in customer service with the public learn to do so by career need. I sometimes urban street hike in areas with lots of people like the San Francisco waterfront tourist areas where I walk about wearing an easy smile. Many people in this era, unlike when I grew up, are inhibited making contact with others they pass in public by looking down or away as they pass. They may sneak a glance at the other passing person and as they do, I've noticed when they see my smile and friendly eyes, some will then slightly smile back at me. That is especially true for older folks most ignore, for those that look poor, various ethnic and foreign persons, and for those that are plain and unattractive.

For me, meeting the gaze of a passing stranger feels like I'm accosting them. When introductions are made, of course, I believe in eye contact and a big smile.
