Natural Mosquito Repellents

I read what Don wrote and decided to delete my post.

I think natural mosquito repellents are normally good. But now, with ticks causing Lyme, I think Don's way of protection may really be a better choice...

When I'm out mowing the yard, or gardening, I rub a few drops of Motor Oil on my arms and cheeks, That 'smell" seems to keep me from getting bitten. However, if I go out into the woods, I spray my arms with Deet, and my boots and pants legs with a fairly diluted mixture of Malathion.....to keep the tics off me. If I DO get a tic, I Never try to pick it off, manually. Instead, I put a few drops of liquid hand soap on it, and it quickly backs out of my skin...at which point I can safely Mash it.
Needless to say, when I'm done for the day, I wipe myself off with a rag at the garden hose, and hang the clothes in the garage to keep the smell out of the house.

Over decades, there has been considerable unresolved controversy about whether DEET at least at occasional use levels is harmful to people. The long Sierra Nevada mountain range contains vast areas above mean winter snow levels or 6000 feet and higher elevations where snow mosquitoes thrive. Personally as a 5 decades hiker, backpacker, and landscape photographer, I have been in those areas many periods when mosquitoes are abundant and dislike getting any bites at all. I avoid using DEET if mosquitoes are not much a bother and tend to site camps in areas they are fewer. Otherwise use 100% DEET on my face and hands, the only unexposed skin areas. The rest of my body is fully clothed with material mosquito probosci cannot penetrate like tight weave nylon. My now octogenarian face has not suffered though there are other human skin types that may.
