Neutered male cat humping his brother

The last few weeks, I've caught one of my 16 year old cats going through the motions of mating with his brother. The one it's being done to is usually asleep or doesn't seem to even notice. Why would he suddenly be doing this?

I think it's just cat nature to go freaky sometimes. Our boy cats hump each other at times right in the front yard...(Hey yo, get a room!). Mr. Foote used to regularly go after Sophie. Never mind she is a dog and betters him by forty pounds. Cats can be way weird.

Not cats, but my female rats do that too. I can usually tell when one is in heat, as the other will be chasing her around trying to mount her.

Not a sexual thing, a "dominance"(non-sexual) thing.

Humping, or mounting, is a sexual position for dogs, but veterinarians who specialize in canine behavior say it often is done for other reasons as well.
David S. Spiegel, VMD, who has a behavioral veterinary practice near Swarthmore, Pa., says in unneutered and unspayed dogs under a year old, humping is usually sexual in nature. But in older dogs it can be a sign of dominance, a reaction to something that has excited the dog, like visitors arriving, or a sign that a dog hasn’t been socialized correctly and doesn’t know appropriate canine behavior.

One of my male bunnies used to hump the other male one on a regular basis, like every hour on the hour it seemed. The humpee didn't seem to care one way or the other.

My sister's golden/lab mix always has to hump the other boy whenever anyone comes in the house. I guess just to show the visitor who's the alpha dog.

She used to have a female mixed breed who always humped her stuffed elephant toy. We called it Humpfrey Eleph-Hump.

All our male cats are fixed. The girl cats will rip them a new nose if they try anything funny. So I suppose they just have each other...the dog I was always puzzled by. I mean this huge dog, perfect partner there. Sophie was terrified of Foote, we'd have to put him out of the room when he got fresh with her. When Callie came Foote backed off...two huge dogs maybe I'm better off with the other boys;)

I agree with Tnthomas, it's a dominance thing. I've had female dogs who are spayed and dominate the male (neutered) by standing over while they're resting or mounting. My puppy tries to catch the cat sometimes and do that, so funny to watch. The cat just has to turn around and say 'enough' with his eyes, and the pup takes off running.

I think our boys are just happily chasing rainbows...who knows what's in their furry brains:D
