New California??

No kidding! The article states at the end-

This is not the first effort to split up California. In 2014, Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper submitted signatures to put a measure that would split California in six separate states.

I've heard of 3 before, but not 6!

Sounds more like a different version of "gerrymandering". Almost all of the heavily populated states have rural areas and large urban areas that are population heavy. It's the natural balance of the country and always has been. I don't have a clue whether this would be a smart political move or not. Anyone know if these two "separate" states would split politically? If so, sadly, that's probably your answer.

Well, they wanted us to be the state of Jefferson. So instead of living in Lakeport,California,I would be living in Lakeport,Jefferson. Ummmm,no. Sad to say,my eldest sister and her husband (both brilliant people,by the way) are all for this.

I admit that I don't have much patience for, or understanding of, politics and economics in general. This whole State of Jefferson movement just makes me scratch my head and wonder what off-the-wall idea some other loose cannon Californian will come up with. Maybe I should educate myself on the movement. I doubt it will ever happen, at least not in my lifetime, but forewarned is forearmed! Then again, I am hoping to sell my house within the next few months and maybe move next door to Nevada. Hmmm.

It wasn't that long ago that northern California wanted to separate from southern California. Seems a lot of that was driven by natural resources, mostly water, and how northern California felt they were getting the short end of the stick in having to supply so much of "their natural resources" to southern California?

If they do split, like West Virginia did from Virginia, maybe they should name the newly formed state Northwestern Mexico so that when Mexico finishes their conquest of the American southwest it won't need to go through another name change. LOL

Yes, it always comes down to politics, but these cases are all mixed with economics. You're correct --- it's very common to have a large divide between rural and urban, and splitting of states has been proposed in a number of states, including my Illinois, over the decades. Chicago takes a huge amount of resources, and the downstate people always believe they are shortchanged in revenues. Illinois is almost 75% farmland, by acreage. In California, 25% of land is farmed. There is a lot of resentment as to how resources should be divided. So, irrespective of how difficult it would be to essentially start a new state, the idea is not unsound (imho).

Right on! Latino's are now the largest ethnic group in California, and rapidly gaining in all of the SW. The Latino web-site...La Raza...has long been advocating for a return on the lands they claim were taken illegally from Mexico during the Mexican/American war....a region they refer to as "Aztlan". California, AZ, New Mexico, Texas, and even parts of Nevada and Colorado are the areas in dispute. Knowing the futility of achieving this goal by any "political" means, it seems that the tactic is to fill this area with Latino's, and almost make the SW a "de facto" extension of Mexico. It may not be that long to the time when English becomes a "2nd language" in the SW.

In addition...California, with about 10% of the nations population, accounts for almost 25% of the nations welfare costs. Could there be a relation with this burgeoning Latino increase???

Since most of the nut cases live in L.A. and S.F. , I'm all for letting them go their own merry way and good riddance.

In the part of the state I live in, English is already a second language. I had to learn to speak at least SOME Spanish just to survive.

And as far as food shopping is concerned ... Oh, never mind. I better not get started on that one.

Leave my state alone ! There's NO reason to split it up.

There are more things to be discussed than splitting up an old established territory.
