Link to CDC director's summary tweet with data link embedded in tweet. Hopefully, this dramatically less virulent and more contagious variant is the one to shift us from pandemic to endemic. This same combination of traits along with natural herd immunity is a common pattern for the end of pandemics throughout history. The combination of natural immunity plus vaccinations will likely have us at endemic within months.

Hopefully, this virus will begin to decline, now that the Holidays "spike" has arrived, and showing signs of slowing down. Maybe by March the numbers will be down substantially, and give the hospital staffs some relief. But then, as warmer weather arrives, the numbers could rise again. I won't be very optimistic until we go through a full year without spikes.

Seasonal spikes will continue, just like with common colds and flu. And like colds and flu, covid will likely be around for a very long time. And like seasonal flu, some people will probably die of seasonal covid until medical science finds a way to prevent it.

Omicron data that's been published up until now have been computer generated models that predicted outcomes rather than show actual data. Now we have the actual data, and we can see that the computer-modeled predictions were way off, and that Omicron is causing far fewer hospitalizations and deaths than computer models predicted.

Also from yesterday--Swiss government: Omicron may be ‘beginning of the end’ of pandemic

“We are perhaps on the eve of a turning point which could be decisive in passing from a pandemic to an endemic phase,” with high levels of immunity in the population, Health Minister Alain Berset told a news conference.

Reading the same message today from multiple international sources.
