New! Figuring out retirement details, though I'd really rather be hiking.

Hi everybody! Nice to be here. I'm 65 and trying to figure out Medicare and insurance, and how to sequence and time each of the steps I need to go through, though I'd much rather be out on the trails. Hiking is the specific thing I most want to be able to do more of. I currently work 3 days a week and am ready to retire as soon as I figure out all the details.

Welcome and congratulations on your nearing retirement!

I remember the timing was confusing, I attended a free webinar on how to start Medicare twice and still called the volunteer line a few times. It was especially confusing that if it wasn't started within three months of a person turning 65 then when they started it they would have a three month gap before it started, unless they had been covered by a plan at work. Gee why they make it so complicated?

And then even though I did everything correctly a lot of my initial 'welcome to medicare' medical bills were rejected because the doctor's office submitted the reimbursement requests with medicare listed as secondary and tertiary. That took months and months to straighten out (mostly because my doctor's office billing people were idiots).
