Hi everyone,

I’m Jeremiah, and I work in helping people — especially seniors and caregivers — stay safe online. Over the years, I’ve seen how quickly scams and fraud tactics have evolved, and sadly, how often they target older adults.

I joined this forum because I want to be part of the conversation, share what I’ve learned, and hopefully hear your experiences too. My goal is to make internet safety simple and stress-free, even for folks who aren’t “tech people.”

Looking forward to chatting with you all, swapping stories, and sharing tips on avoiding scams, protecting personal info, and staying safe on the web.

What’s one scam or suspicious message you’ve seen recently?

I think you must be very young Jeremiah if you think older people are not already well aware of fraud and scams online. if you are young then we were using computers before you were born, and also you're too young for this forum..which is strictly over 50's only !

Thanks for looking out for us. Your post seems highly motivated and professionally written.

Somehow I'm not believing you. A lot of us are very adept to technology, have been online since the internet started, keep up with the changes and have even worked in the field. Simply because we are older doesn't mean we are missing a step. If you're doing this to make money and get contacts, just say so.

I think just because some seniors get robbed blind by falling for scams, "young'uns" think we all do. That's kind of like us thinking all millennials have Tide Pods with their cereal for breakfast just because some of them ate those years ago.

Hello Holly!

I'm sure everyone is aware of frauds and scams online, but not everyone is able to navigate with ease. I've had a couple of people (my mother included) have run ins with scams and I've gotten numerous questions because of it. My aunt has had a few suspicious emails sent to her and she came straight to me for help.

I love to research what new scams may be and what might occur in this always evolving tech world. I just wish to be an informant to other individuals who are more likely to be targeted.

I'm just an professional IT that is more than happy to impart some information to people who need it!

Just yesterday I got a phone call, canned voice sounded important, told me someone had put $300.00 and then another $1000.00+ on our Visa. If we hadn't made those purchases , push that number. I know better than to fall for those scams, then after I hung up it hit me we don't have a Visa card, chopped it up years ago! I'm always suspicious of phone numbers I don't recognize, and more so with the internet. I'm so careful but I am sure you can teach us a good deal about internet fraud.

Yours. Jeremiah.
Hey Della, I completely understand your caution! You are right to be skeptical online!

A lot of scams prey on people’s trust, and they often have the same three “red flags”:
  • They create urgency
  • They exaggerate
  • They ask for money or sensitive info

My post has none of those. I’m not asking for passwords, bank details, or payment. I’m simply offering free, straightforward guidance on common scams and how to avoid them.

I believe trust is earned through open, ongoing conversation. If you (or anyone else here) has questions about online safety — even if you’re not interested in a session — I’m happy to answer them right here in the forum.

Thanks for bringing up your concern. The more we talk openly about scams, the harder it is for the bad guys to win!

Wow, thank you for sharing that story — it’s a perfect example of how sneaky these scams can be.

Even though you spotted it right away, that “urgent, important” tone is exactly what these automated calls are designed to use. Also the fact they were referencing a Visa you don’t even have just shows they’re throwing out random bait, hoping someone will bite.

For anyone reading this, here’s how to handle calls like this:
  • Hang up immediately — don’t press any buttons.
  • Never confirm any personal or financial info over the phone.
  • Call your bank or card provider directly (using the number on your statement or their official site) if you’re concerned.
  • You can also report these calls to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov so they can track patterns.

I’m glad you shared this — real-world examples like yours help others stay alert.

p.s I love the Daisy Duck profile picture @mrstime

It would be kind of silly to ask for those things right after joining now, wouldn't it? So... you mentioned your mom and aunt... how much over 50 are you, if I may ask? I saw you were reading the "Is SF for Seniors Only" thread a little while ago, so you would have seen the age rule from Terms & Rules posted there. I'm just the curious type, can't help it. Being decrepit, it gives me a right to do stuff like that and get away with it.

I completely understand your point — and you’re absolutely right. Many older adults are very tech-savvy, have been online since the early days, and in some cases, know more than the average 20-year-old scrolling on TikTok. My goal here isn’t to lump everyone into one category or assume a lack of skills.

I run internet safety sessions because scams evolve quickly, and even people who are highly experienced with technology can get caught off guard — not because they lack knowledge, but because scammers use increasingly convincing tactics.

And yes, this is my business, and I do offer paid group and one-on-one sessions. But I’m also here to share free tips, answer questions, and point people toward resources whether or not they ever become a client.

My focus is on helping those who want extra tools or a second set of eyes — regardless of their age or skill level.

Thanks for asking! I’m actually not in the 50+ demographic myself — but my work focuses on helping older adults and families stay safe online because scams and fraud tactics are constantly changing. I’ve trained with and learned from people in this community, and I tailor my resources to address the specific types of scams and risks that target older generations.

Also I've looked at that thread to do my due diligence after Holly's reply. This seems like it will be my first and only post here, I didn't mean to breach any rules, just looking for communities that I may impart some friendly knowledge and resources. I will inform anyone I know above the age threshold about the wonderful community that lives here.

That's very kind of you to want to help people, Jeremiah. There are a lot of forums without age restrictions, and your information sounds helpful as long as you aren't charging for the service. Best of luck to you!

Maybe you should read the second paragraph on the attached link.
I've read the rules!

I was just a little gung-ho joining the community I read them after someone had told me what the issue might be haha.

Thank you for providing the link to the terms and rules anyways.
