I’ve been lurking for a couple of months and finally decided to join in. I’m 69, retired, and live alone with two evil little black cats.

Oh. A "southerner". Many years ago, when we were all much younger, I lived and worked in West Allis at Allis-Chalmers. Roommate and I liked it there because it wasn't as cold and snowy as in the north.

The difference in weather is pretty drastic. Also, I live right on Lake Michigan, so we get our own weather different from just a mile west.
