My wife and I currently live in Illinois and are approaching retirement. We are searching for the perfect (if there is one) retirement location. Our criteria:
Average to low cost of housing, decent medical care, open minded folks who are environmentally conscious, good fishing and hunting for me, dog agility for my wife. Anyone share these interests and found the right spot?

Welcome to the forum, Tiny! I love where I live except the weather, so to resolve that we simply travel to places with better weather. :) I live in West Scotland. Hope someone call help you find your ideal place.

Hi tinytorpedo! You'll enjoy it here in SeniorForums. Are you looking for a milder climate? What kind of fish or fishing are you looking for. Fly fishing? Salmon? Trout? And what do you mean "dog agility"? Do you mean a place where he can runs free? Just curious but what kind of dog do you have and what's his/her name?

Welcome, Tiny! I was born & raised outside Chicago. Never ventured beyond Wisconsin or Michigan, till I married in 1965, headed west on I-80, it then being 75% complete. My first view of a real mountain, in person, all but took my breath away! That was as we approached Denver. The Loveland Pass had snow on the ground, it being July 16th! We continued on, all the way to L.A., where I had an Uncle living. I was quickly "hooked" on leaving my birthplace of Berwyn, IL.

Having "retired" 3 times, I suppose I may be somewhat "expert" at it. After leaving IL at 30, I lived in Las Vegas (then a very popular retirement spot), then Colorado, Indiana, Arizona, AZ being the longest period, 20 years. During the Reagan Recession I "retired" the first time, though not voluntarily. Lived in a cabin I built at 6,700 ft. altitude with no 'phone, power, or water, a year. Not really a retirement, but shocked family could not comprehend it, though my co-workers upon returning to my former job, were unanimous in assessing what we had done as amazing.

The 2nd. retirement was for real, voluntary, 1999, I was 57, we sold our home in Phoenix, bought a 300-acre spread in the Missouri Ozarks with two others in partnership of sorts; we got 90 acres and an old farmhouse, one of my wife's dreams come true. I was then still 5 years away from the promised opening of the huge S/S vault doors. Neither of us sought jobs during that 5 years, though I accepted the local high school's plea to teach Math there a year; that helped ease the 5 year money drought.

The third retirement in 2012 consisted of the final move, again out West, the area being arid desert, in high-demand by a large retiree contingent both permanent, and part-time, winter residents from all over the country. We feel we have found the final place for us. Weather is wonderful for 9 months out of the year, very hot for 3; proximity to the Colorado River eases that condition considerably. We live about 10 miles south of the Laughlin, NV/Bullhead City, AZ area. We can recommend the area for retirement, though our viewpoint is obviously slanted. Desert-living is far different from Midwestern, and surely not for everyone. imp

Hi Tiny (and wife) to our forum. Your hosts are Matrix (Administrator) and SeaBreeze (Moderator). It's an nice place to hang out. I retired in 1991. I have owned homes in 5 states since then and still don't know the "Ideal" place to retire. Welcome.

Welcome to the forum Tinytorpedo! :welcome: Lots of good places to retire, just depends on your likes regarding weather, etc. Dog agility interests are probably popular in most places.

Any fresh water fishing would fit the bill and deer hunting is a requirement. Dog agility is a sport where people train, then run their dogs through a course comprised of jumps, tunnels, weave poles, etc. Dylan is our Shepard and Missy is our deaf Fiest. My wife competes with her also.

Hello tinytorpedo and welcome to the forum from another newbie.

For retirement or just plain living you can't beat Western Washington...

I live near the Olympic Forest...

And I'm very partial to this little town, I lived there for 15 years, Issaquah WA...

Washington has won several national awards like "most livable", "best place to do business", "best public transportation", and for a long time, not sure about the present, but the highest minimum wage in the country.

The University of Washington is world renowned for it's medical facilities.

And the weather is really some of the most clement in the country.

It drizzles more than it actually rains and our clouds give us mild summers (like today) and serves as a blanket in winter, we get only a few inches of snow a year at sea level...

When they have floods and tornados and frigid winters with ice an inch thick breaking the trees, we got 62 degrees...

So you won't have to snowbird it and think of how much we save on heating and air conditioning bills.

And the fishing is tremendous, you can go freshwater fishing in the morning, travel just a couple miles and do some saltwater fishing in the afternoon.

They have orca in Hood Canal where I live.

I've been all over the country and this place is easily the best!

Good luck in your quest and I hope you find the place of your dreams, I found mine here.

Thx :)

Check out Sun City Roseville, California. I lived there from the time I retired at age 55 until last year (25 Years) good weather, two hours to San Francisco., two hours to Lake Tahoe/Reno, Great life style, only 3100 individual homes/ great amenities.

Thanks for clarifying. I learn something new everyday ("dog agility"). You would love the area in upstate NY around the Ausable River. Freshwater fishing there can't be beat, deer are plentiful, and so is the beauty of the landscape…especially in the fall. Then for the summer, head south around the Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway. Brevard, in NC, is a nice mountain town with a college, beautiful Performing Arts Center and lots of retirees…plus it's next to the Pisgah Forest. There is a community that is affordable called Connesstee Falls where many of the retirees live. It's gated, has a pretty lake, golf course, tennis, swimming, and planned activities, and fine dining at the clubhouse with a great view. There are waterfalls and hikes nearby. "The Last of the Mohican" was shot there.

Arkansas works for me. Hard to beat the cost of living, as well as cost of property. I think you can find all you seek here. A lot less winter too.

We live in Washington in the summer on an island (Puget Island near Cathlamet, WA) in the Columbia river, about 22 miles circumference (sp?). It is moderate in climate with little rain. Most of the other several hundred residents are also retired. In the winter we live in Green Valley, AZ and love the moderate winter weather there. Makes for a nice life at moderate cost. Plenty of fishing on the Columbia (salmon) and other lakes in Washington. Also a surprising amount of fishing in the mountain lakes in Arizona (nice trout). The grandkids love to come and see us on the island in the summer. Lots to do. Harold
