New York Bans De-Clawing Of Cats

New York's Legislature passed a bill Tuesday that would make the state the first in the U.S. to make it illegal to declaw a cat, imposing a $1,000 fine on veterinarians who preform the procedure. (June 4)


 

I'm happy for the cats but I'm sad that it took 4 1/2 years for our legislators to make this decision.

Imagine how long it will take them to do something important for the benefit of the people that elected them.

I'm happy for the cats too, Bea. ^ It's a cruel thing to do to a cat because they have no defenses afterwards. My older cousin declawed her gorgeous Persian cat and he spent the rest of his life hiding under the bed. No lie. If a person doesn't want clawed furniture that badly, then they need to face the fact that a cat is not the pet for them. It's so simple.

Exactly. I think declawing a cat is a very cruel and unfair thing to do. It is their natural defence system. If you don’t like the claws on a cat then use common sense and don’t get one.

If you met a man and he fell for you and said he’d like to take you home but first needed to rip out all your fingernails, how many people would be ok with it? It’s totally barbaric.

Its about time this happened. It shouldn’t have been legal in the first place.
 
Good. Because declawing a cat is like taking away a person's guns. It leaves them defenseless.

I'll give up my claws when they pry my cold dead paws from around them.

When claws are outlawed, only outlaws will have claws. :)
 
Declawing is horrific. I worked as a vet assistant, to a well known house call vet, when I was in pre-vet med. The stories I could tell- - - but won't.
 
Good news for NY cats! I'm happy they passed this law. Just wish more States would do the same. Declawing a cat involves removing the last bone of each toe on the cat's paw. How painful for the cat to recover from such a surgery.
 
I've had pet cats for most of my life. They have left little memorials to themselves in holes to my upholstery, scratches on my woodwork, and claw marks on my furniture. All this comes with having cats. If you're a cat lover, it's what you expect. I'm trying to figure out who were the declawing constituents for the NY politicians.

Ditto. I've had about 10 cats, not all at once, :love_heart:. They do leave little momentos but that just comes with the territory. If you really love a cat, you'd never consider declawing for an instant. If claw marks are going to bother you, choose another type of pet.

Not all at once or we will have to refer to you as the ‘cat lady.’ :lol:
My thoughts exactly. Our cat claws up our leather furniture all the time and pulls the rubber from our door scratching to get in. We get lots of mosquitos in our house because of it but that’s to be expected when you get a cat. They also leave treats for you on the back porch as a token of their love and affection. :(.

NY is quite a large state. You may be thinking only of New York City which has a big rat problem. London and Paris are also on Animal Planet's Top Ten rattiest cities, but NYC is first.
