What is it?

I have heard it several times lately, I even heard a song,
of the same name.

Is it a real period of time?
Is it a throw away statement to get attention?
Is it a secret that only New Yorkers know?

OK, I could ask Google, but decided to ask some American people,
who surely know what it is, or if it is anything.

Somebody told me or I read it somewhere, the time between the
traffic light going to green and the driver behind beeping he horn,
is a New York minute.

Does anybody know?

I think it means a very fast paced society. Things are go go, gotta keep up. Someone else may know more.

That's how the phrase was coined, but it just means very fast.
