New York Times : Why don't Britain/UK homes have AC

I thnk for the most part they have never had to deal with the problem of extreme heat. I know I did not believe in global warming but I do know. When I was a kid, we bought back to school clothes that included jeans and jackets for September. Now we don't have a fall, we are lucky to get colder weather in November. I love the cool of fall and the cold of winter. We did have a really bad spell last year in winter. I can handle that easier than this boiling heat.

I don't know who wrote the article in the OP< but it wasn't a Brit, they spoke of ''apartments' we don't call them apartments ..

ThIS is the reason we don't have AC routinely in private houses..

Both old, Victorian-era architecture and newly-developed properties in the U.K. are inadequately prepared for hot weather, Marialena Nikolopoulou, professor of sustainable architecture at the University of Kent, tells TIME. While the thick, stone walls of older homes help to keep internal environments cool, large windows and unsuitable insulation can counteract the benefits. British homes are built to keep heat in and cold out

With modern buildings, problems arise from shoddy design. “Frequently nowadays, developers buy a flat and refurbish it to sell for profit. So they try to do it the cheapest possible way,” Nikolopoulou says, referring to buildings that cram many apartments within it. Doing so reduces the likelihood of cross ventilation from windows across the building, she says.

In hotter European countries, like Spain, apartment blocks are often built around a central cavity that allows for a continuous flow of air. Using inappropriate building materials to improve appearance or provide cheap insulation in large apartment blocks can lead to what Nikolopoulou calls a “greenhouse effect” in summer, where heat has nowhere to go.

What’s more, experts say that climate change will soon render winter-proof design useless for many months of the year. “By 2050, we will regularly have temperatures above 35°C in the south of the U.K.,” said Chloe Brimicombe, a heat stress researcher at the University of Reading. This could cause an extra 5,000-7,000 deaths from heat exhaustion by the 2050s.

way back in '76 we had these freak temperatures.. and for the last 4 years we've been having very high temps from April through September here in the South of England.. in fact before Covid hit, I told my husband we'd have to get AC installed and dang the expense and he agreed.. .. now the temps are beyond anything we've ever had to deal with. Right now I have 2 oscilating floor fans on , and in this room it's 96 deg at 1/4 to 1 in the morning... it's like Bakehouse in here..horrible..

I feel so bad for you, it is just as bad here. I have the ceiling fan going and have the AC set at 78. Even with that I get overheated when I am up doing chores in the house. You just amaze me, getting out there, doing hard work in the yard when it is so hot. That is why you look so good and are so fit. Hard work good for the body and the soul. Be careful out there. Hope it cools down for you soon!

I completely agree @Blessed! HD is amazing doing all of that work - I couldn't do the same if the temperatures were a lot cooler.

@hollydolly I'm such a wimp when it comes to hot weather. Some people like it, others deal with it and then there are people like me who crumple into a ball and stop functioning. You do one-hundred fold more than I would/could in these soaring temps.

It's hot and humid here but we finally had a small amount of rain last night. But there aren't predictions of any more for at least a week 😓

I think Climate Change and Global Warming is happening much quicker than most people realize....especially in highly populated regions like Europe. I spent 4 years in Germany, back in the early '60's, and there were very few days each year when the heat became a bit uncomfortable. The barracks and shops didn't have AC, but it was rare to see a daytime high reach the mid 80's.

Europe seems to be going through an unusually hot Summer....as are parts of the U.S. Hopefully, this year is Not a sign of what may well become the Norm.

not true...Spain , Portugal, Greece and more are routinely above 90 degrees, for 6 month of the year.. and very often 100 plus, and they've always had those high temps..

Southern France too..

England.. ( not the UK)>. but Southern England in particular has been having these ( not quite as high as right now 104 degrees)>. but very high temps for at least 2 or 3 months of the year for the last 4 years.. so it's definitely not a one off..

Germany is closer to the colder Scandinavian countries, so perhaps that's the reason they don't get it hot there.

..but I certainly agree about Climate change...

I was born in France, child of military family. They never told stories about heat but many about cold winters in both France and Germany. My sister and I have a few keepsakes from that time. Two are beautiful thick wool blankets they brought home to the states

but the south of France has ALWAYS been hot... it's the playground of the rich..

@ I would have go search in there papers to see where we were. I know it was outside of Paris. My Mom was made to go to Paris and await my birth. There must have been a US military base so I don't know why that happened. She told a story of living in a house where the top floor was for people and the ground floor was more or less a barn for animals. She had no pictures. In Germany there are pictures. I think is one on base. Homes like a normal looking neighborhood but they were all connected not free standing.

When I lived in Washington state about 1985-93, it was usually only hot July-August. June could still be cool. Most homes and apartments did not have AC. I know things are changing up there also

Holy cow, I'd freeze if we kept the A/C set at 78!!! I'm very cold natured and cannot tolerate being cold. I'm known to have visitors boiling hot due to my keeping the A/C at 82. LOL I am serious.

My sister Lucy keeps her A/C at 72 and I was miserably cold when I stayed there on visits. We now stay at a hotel; hubby is cold natured as well.

@PamfromTx , I get it, I am hot natured. People do the same thing in my home in the winter. They think I am living in a meat locker and can't afford heat. I just like it cold. I do keep soft cozy throws on the couch and chairs for others, LOL. There is always a hot cup tea, chocolate or soup/broth available. I love all those things in the winter.

I have some funny stories to tell about our visitor's adventures at our home. lol

Right now it is set at 84 !!!!

Yes, they are. I have a good friend who lives in a suburb of Seattle. Her house got up to 105 degrees inside during a recent heatwave. She had to sleep outside at night. So many places that never experienced these heatwaves in the past are now suffering.

England is pretty far north to be having such hot weather. London is at about 51.5° latitude, which is actually further north than Calgary, Canada. The temperature is moderated by the Gulf Stream, which sends the warm water from the Gulf of Mexico up the eastern coast of the U.S. and then over to the British Isles. But this heat is coming from south of England... a "plume" of heat.

Air conditioning, UK style.

Oh yes, round here when it get's very hot, we organise circle parties.
Usually, ten or so sit around on straight chairs forming a circle, then the host/hostess then passes round ice lollies.
The idea is for everyone to simultaneously take a bite (or suck) of their lolly, then blow as hard as possible at the person directly opposite.
I always ask for orange flavour, but the strawberry ones are not bad. 😊

Why would I want A/C for a couple of days a year when I might want heating for the other 360 odd ?
Here in Scotland we rarely see high temps, but they have occurred in the past and nobody made a fuss of it.
It's mild and overcast at present.
