Hello,

I recently retired from LAUSD, and I will be turning 65 in May. I am being bombarded with all these items concerning Medicare. Wow. My concern is, can I continue to keep my TRS that I contributed to, but what Medicare Plan am I now required to select. There are so many choices? Do I really need to select supplemental plan D, when my district plan has a great prescription attached to it? Thank you all so much. Alex
 

Welcome, Alex! I will be turning 65 in October so I haven't really looked at all the Medicate alternatives yet, but I do want to welcome you to this great forum!

It's all a bit of a learning curve, but what worked for me is that I had already been a Kaiser-Permanente customer through my employer group coverage, so I just signed up for the senior advantage plus plan. Social security pays Kaiser $134/mo. out of my SS check, and for the "plus" part of the plan I pay Kaiser $20/mo. for vision, hearing,dental and gym coverage. I imagine the same holds true with Blue Shield, Humana or United Health, to name a few.

Contact your states SHIIP office they were a big help to me. They will help over the phone or come to your home if transportation is an issue.

Welcome to our forum, Alex. :)

To the Part D question, I am not an expert but I would think no, that you do not need it, because you already have a prescription coverage plan.
It's an optional and separate add-on, that would cost you, and I don't know why or how, you would use it.

I don't have any idea about your other question. It would likely be best to ask someone with that specific knowledge, within your own State, and probably ask the coverage program people that you already do have and want to keep.

You're right that Humana has a good Medicare Maintenance program. That's what i have. It covers basic dental checkups and cleanings, but have a Dental plan i pay for thru them too. I get prescriptions thru their online phamacy, and they give a quarterly 'allowance' (and i don't even paying shipping) for OTC meds and first aid items thru them. Corneal specialist expenses are considered medical since eye disease reason i need the specialist. But i still have my VSP plan from when i worked at UW to cover regular ophthalmologist and eyeglass expenses.

I'm retiring at the end of this week and need to sign up for a prescription plan too.

I first attended a webinar from my local SHIP (for Nebraska) and then had a few one-on-one phone calls with them, to help me decide on which Medicare supplement and prescription plan to choose. I hope I've made the right choices.
