Newtown, Connecticut
14 December 2012

Angel of evil do not descend on this sunlit town in early morning,
First grade still unaccustomed to the day,
In the corridor the scraping of boots
Coats crowded on hooks, busy hands adjusting at desks.
The bell has rung, their teacher greets them, hovering.
Toward the windowsill a sidelong glance, the candle the wreath.
Their Christmas nearing. Still so new when six.
Be merciful angel, do not alight. Stay winged, pass on over.

Charles...Thanks for the remembrance. That was a very black day in our country for sure. It's too bad that mention of this heartbreaking situation has to always spark a conversation on gun control, which is why I suspect there has been no response to your thread.

I, for one do not want to go around and around with fellow forum members on the pros and cons of the politics and realities of gun control.

All we can do now is to keep the victims of this horrendous crime in our hearts and minds and remember that no amount of politics will bring them back, or even prevent another incident it in the future.

That isn't the case with me. It's just way more than I can stand to discuss. Even though it was a car accident and my son was 19 when I lost him, this kind of stuff brings things I have shoved in the back of the closest, galloping to the forefront. More often than not, I won't even read a thread like this, with no offense to the Poster - just my own inner feelings.

Far as gun control - yeah that's a hot topic and I stay out of that too - lol lol

I have guns and none of them are military assault style weapons. I am a dead-eye shot; if I can't knock the nuts off somebody in five shots, I'm just going to throw the gun and say "you win".

It is very difficult today for politicians and the media to not use an event like SHES to stir up the pot mostly for the sake of increased ratings/notoriety. We are all just considered eyeballs and clicks to these folks, I really don't think many care about solutions based on facts.

I remember a quote I saw a couple of years ago - "If there is no product, YOU are the product" Unfortunately, that's what we are to politicians and the media, just their "product."

SHES was one of America's most terrible events and if it makes you sad and try to withdraw from thinking about it that just means you are normal.

Spot on!

I didn't respond to the thread, and it had nothing to do with gun control. I am very sorry that those innocent children lost their lives like that, and my heart goes out to the families who are devastated, and will be affected by this evil act forever. I live very close to the theater that had a massacre not that long ago, and frequented it often. There's no excuse for violence like this, and we can't fill the empty holes in all the hearts left in the wake of these tragedies.

Those of us who lose loved ones, where violence is not involved, also have lasting emptiness and pain in our hearts, which we will take to our graves. I did not reply to the thread, because in my eyes, it was another exploitation of the event...not for ratings or political gain, but for financial purposes, in the form of exposure, book sales, etc. No personal thoughts to accompany the copied poem, just a link that indirectly leads to a shopping cart.

You don't have to agree with me, I don't want to offend anyone, just putting my personal feelings out there, as not to be labeled into any specific category for not replying. Sometimes things are not that simple.

If you don't mind, I am responding to let you know that I won't respond to this topic..
NO WAY !!!

I will only say that guns don't kill people........
People kill people....

I said it !!!!!

I was curious as to why there was no response to this thread, that's unusual. The only thing my pea brain could come up with was the gun control issue. Those of you that have responded have very valid reasons for ignoring this thread that I didn't think of.

Seabreeze, I did not catch onto the link factor, as I didn't click on it. I don't usually click on links from people I don't know. I did notice there were no personal comments by the OP, and that subliminally bothered me, as well. You're right, things aren't always what they seem to be.

TWH, my apologies if I compelled you to respond to such a sensitive subject that you had already decided to stay away from..

Steve.. Thanks for your brave declaration, ditto.

Seabreeze, I didn't see the link either - thanks for pointing that out.

Ozarkgal, not to worry, no apologies needed. Erik's accident was in early April, ten years after dad's passing but only a few days apart. Every year about this time, like or not, my subsconscious starts bringing "things" to the forefront. I might have looked at the original post thru different eyes, had I seen it during a different time of the year - I dunno. It will be 20 years but, it's amazing the things that come crashing back this time of year. These next few months will see me spending a lot of time doing stuff outside -- even if it means frostbite - :topsy_turvy:

Steve,

I thought the lack of response was more due to the emotional weight of the event rather than gun control. It's better to talk about our pain than keep it bottled up inside us. We all are frustrated and angry that these crazies do not just blow their own brains out first and be done with it rather than hurting others directly and indirectly.

If guns kill people, then
Pencils misspell words,
Cars make people drive drunk,
Spoons make Rosie O'Donnell fat.

Exactly!

I just found out that Arizona has what they call Constitutional Carry. Any adult with no felony can simply carry concealed. But here in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornistan, that'll never happen. We can pack while we fish or hunt and our RVs are considered our homes and can have firearms in them. Anytime I'm in the boat or RV I'm packing. Trouble is, many of the bad guys are packing all the time.

When I was driving truck I always carried, CCW law or not. As they say, "I'd rather be tried by twelve than carried by eight." :)

Your post is right on the money. Do any of you have a Concealed Carry License. I have one for the state of Kentucky.

I did when I lived in PA. Partly because of hauling the horses all over creation to trail ride. Every horseman's worst nightmare is a truck/trailer accident, your horses are trapped in a trailer laying on it's side, and you know they are hurt bad enough to not survive. I didn't want to have hear a horse go thru that while I was waiting for a state trooper. Thankfully, that never happened.

There was also a point in time when I had a job that required me to drive thru one of the toughest areas in the SE section of Youngstown, OH to get to my job. That area had been known for riots during the early 70's and was still full of leftover drunks and prostitutes at 6:30 in the morning.

Not taking that shortcut meant adding another 15 - 20 minutes to what was already a very long drive from the PA side of the border and it was a high paying job. Thankfully nobody was interested in a little purple Saturn trying to anonymously zip thru that side of town. The police always saw me sort of speeding and my engineers marveled that I never got pulled over; I figured they ran my license and somebody no doubt followed me a few times in a plain car to see where I went. I'm not kidding, this is Youngstown I'm talking about - lol lol lol
