No Card? No Service!

Paranoia has set in at the supermarkets.

Cashiers on the tills now refuse to handle money, they think
that they might catch something from it, you must use a card,
preferably a contactless one.

If I go round the shop and put things into a trolly, then take them
out again at the till using the same hands that would pass money
over, why then am I not asked to put the goods through the scanner
and just let the cashier watch?

Crazy, many hands have already touched the goods.

Mike.

Well they've only been accepting contactless in most stores here for the last couple of weeks. The only exception was the small indpendent hardware shop last week, because I bought something for £3, and they only take card for good over £6... so he took cash but with gloved hands.

Mike, I understand that many hands have already touched the goods but in the meantime why don't you just use a self service checkout, and contactless card,, only you need to touch your goods then...or self scan... , and then when you get home clean your cans and sealed packets before packing them away.

Someone today elswhere said they're using carrier bags to take shopping home, then throwing the bags away... might be a good idea.

This means that we will now all have to carry our cards with us, something I don't normally do, which will make us a greater target for thieves.

Cubicles around cashiers next perhaps, and disinfecting booths for customers as they enter the stores.

I always use the "Scan As You Shop" thingy, a self scanner, then
bag the stuff immediately in the trolly, pay at a robotic checkout
with a card.

No problem unless you buy booze or something with a tag on it.

At one of our grocery stores, the clerks have plastic between us and them (a sneeze guard); they have a large container with water and they wash their hands after every shopper. Then they take a wipe and wipe down everything.

But the other day our bagger was sick, had a cold and her throat was so sore she couldn‘t talk. Why the checker didn’t report this I have no ideal. Why she came to work puzzled me, and I reported her. I hope they sent her home. No way to tell if she had a cold or the virus. The young just don’t get it.

Oh yes the young do get it Aneeda, an 18 year old died of
the virus here a couple of days ago.

Here is another link about a teenager under 18 years old
who died in LA County.

Very sad, this virus doesn't care about age, though the young
are supposed to be more resillient.

I meant that they don’t understand they should stay at home when sick. But, as spring break proved, they don’t understand the seriousness of the situation which is somewhat normal for their age group as well.

I work p/t at a large grocery chain store. Our cashiers change gloves after each customer. It has been the week from hell working. I start at 6 a.m. and seniors get to shop from 6-7 before the store opens to everyone.

I work in the nest dept. our truck normally arrives at 5 a.m., so we don’t have much time before the doors open. Yesterday, we didn’t receive any eggs. You would have thought the world was ending. Today, was a better day.

Overall, people have been OK. Some better than others and some very rude and disrespectful.

And then you have the just plain panicked to the max scared people. I have run into two of those, very scary. One I’d tried to calm down, lol, he wanted his TP and wanted it now. Let him have my place in line and the checker gave him two although the limit was one.

We both just wanted him happy and gone. I am sorry you have to deal with this. We all appreciate our cashiers very much. As for eggs, I can live without them, got two the other day, gave one to a neighbor. Week later got two again. Have to make egg salad today.

Be careful.

TP? We have several packs of 2, 4, 6 and 8 first thing in the morning because the grocery side stocks overnight, whereas, the meat department side, which is my department, stocks the first thing in the a.m. We open at 6 and the TP is gone by 8 now. Before, like last week, it would have been gone by 6:30. We still are not receiving any hand sanitizers. Water is also an issue on certain days.

Purdue has forewarned us that they are "temporarily", suspending making any breaded products. This includes: Chicken patties, nuggets and tenders. People want just the fresh or frozen chicken or parts for now and they can get it to the consumer quicker if they don't have to bread and fry it.

If you know of anyone that buys nuggets for their kids, you may want to give them a heads up. I have no idea if Tyson will follow suit. IMO, Purdue wins hands down with their nuggets. Man, they are good. Of course, Chick-Fil-A beats them all.

actually that's a good point Bea...currently our local supermarket is not taking cash at all.... hmmmm...wonder what they do when someone only has cash?
Sainsburys is leaving all the self serve tills for people
who want to pay with cash, they are also building a
barrier round each cashier to protect them.
