I just read that the order from the CDC and the White House to stop all evictions until next June has been overturned by a Federal judge.

Read about here. Evictions

Yes, I was just reading about this online.

I feel sorry for the folks that will become homeless but it's understandable that a landlord cannot keep housing people for free. They have bills to pay too. Without rent monies coming in, how can they afford to pay their property taxes etc., on the buildings that house these renters. The renters will never be able to catch up paying their back rent.

I agree. I thought these smaller landlords were eligible for federal money or other relief due to loss of income from renters who could not pay.

We have a statewide moratorium in effect until the end of August. I don't believe that will change because of the ruling against the CDC.

In my county, they have started taking applications to distribute $27MM in federal grants to pay landlords a portion of the back rent that is due. Priority is being given to landlords with less than 20 units. At this point, it is unclear when or how much money will be applied to an individual's back rent.

I'm curious to see what happens when the moratorium does finally expire and what arrangements if any will be made between landlords and tenants to come current on any shortfalls that still exist.

Some landlords turn down the federal money because they said it came with too many strings attached like removing problematic tenants, turning over sensitive financial information to government agencies and contractors.

The decision doesn't affect state and local eviction moratoriums and is being appealed at the federal level.

People's lives are going to be completely ruined if they have to pay back six months of rent or whatever. Maybe there should be grants available. Hell, we bailed out big corporations that didn't even need bailing out. Why not help the poor who really need the help?

This is stupid. We're printing $6 trillion we don't have. Print a few billion more and pay these peoples' rent. Why take it out of the landlords' pockets? Most "landlords" are people like your neighbors who own a couple of rental properties. They can't afford to lose income anymore than anyone else can.

Of course, if you want to make sure that no one ever invests in real estate again -- thereby driving up prices on the existing stock of housing -- then by all means make it illegal to evict someone for not paying rent.
