No More Gasoline Commercials

Yesterday there was a TV ad for Marathon gasoline and it dawned on me we don't ads for gasoline companies anymore at least im my viewing area. Also, not many coffee commercials now days.

I can remember ads for Texaco and Esso gas and service stations, where their neat, polite, and uniformed attendants would come out, pump your gas, clean your windshield, and check your oil. They might even give out promotional items like steak knives and salad bowls with a fill-up. Sadly, those days are long gone...

In Canada we have a commercial that says “Live by the Leaf.” Considering that cannabis is legal, you’d think that’s what the commercial is about. No. It’s a marketing ad for Petro Canada gas stations.

“’Live by the Leaf’ and ‘Fièrement d’ici’ are more than our tag lines; they are our rallying cry with Canadians, one which will underpin our marketing and communications efforts for years to come,” Smith said. “We want to demonstrate to Canadians that we share more than a country, we share a way of life.”

JMO, a really stupid concept for a gas station commercial. Usually the highest prices in town too.

These days, you’re lucky in my parts if you can get a gas station attendant who speaks English as their primary language. Don’t hold your breath waiting for them to check your oil or wash your windshield, either. But in the 1950’s and early 60’s, the slogans were “Trust Your Car to the Man Who Wears A Star” (Texaco), and “Put A Tiger In Your Tank” (Esso/Exxon). For a while, Esso gave out stuffed tiger tails you could attach to your gas cap! Those were the days...

Maybe, but today's gasoline is cleaner and better (mostly). It is also less marked up, much higher volume stations without the service holds overheads and margins down. Not all the changes have been bad.

I kinda miss the jingles though... "you can trust your car to the man who wears the star..."
