Notes from Pappy's diary

Tried my luck at boiling cabbage. I’m doing most of the meals now. Shredded the cabbage, put water on to boil, added a teaspoon of salt to water, put in cabbage for 5minutes adding butter, salt and pepper. Put cabbage in calendar, drained and put cabbage back in hot drained pot and stirred well.
Any suggestions appreciated. Should I add something more?
PS…it was pretty good but I could have left to boil another minute or so.

Pappys Living the Dream Diary..Well Kinda

Tomorrow, Monday, is my semi-annual CT scan for a aortic anorism. Not too much to it but the dye they put in me makes me feel like I'm going to pee my pants. Oh, who cares. I'm pushing 77 and have a good excuse, right. I have been lucky that it hasn't enlarged over the years but aways get a little concerned waiting for results. If it reaches 5 centimeters, it means open heart surgery.

Today was was a very quiet day. Had breakfast with some good friends that came to Florida from my hometown, Norwich, NY. My neighbor, who is from England, pronounces it Norich. She said there is a Norwich in England.

Watched some football today, but did a lot of reading. It was in the low sixties and a bit cool and too windy for any bike riding. It's about 7:00 so guess I'll turn on the Telly and see what garbage is on tonight.

LATER ALL.
I had the same operation a little over a year ago. All is well. Check up and new scan every 6 months. All is well however.
If you are over 3.6 GET IT DONE NOW. Hear me. Don't push it. If it goes you are dead in minutes. Surgery is simple, painless. One day in the hospital and then you go home. Get it done now.

Try not boiling it..because you boil all the vitamins out... but if you really do need to or want to.. boil in just a couple of inches of salted water... don't boil it like you're boiling potatoes... then boil for about 5 minutes if it's finely shredded..if it's quartered boil for 10-15 minutes.. and drain in a Colander ... THEN put the butter and pepper in afterwards...don't put it in during the boiling...

Try cooking shredded cabbage in a frying pan sauteed...it's a completely different taste to boiled..really delicious..

Add butter and olive oil to a heavy based pan... just a sponful of each is all you need... instantly the butter melts ( keep the heat low so it doesn't burn)... add the cabbage immediately , it will take up a lot of space but it will cook down quickly..toss it a few times but don't toss like a salad..leave it to cook without turning for about 5 -7 minutes of so on each side and it will caramelize ...

If you want to add bacon to the cabbage , cut up the bacon with scissors, and fry , and set aside... then cook your cabbage in the same oil ..

Thank you holly. Love the bacon idea. Will try this next time.

I’m lazy, I start with a bag of shredded coleslaw.

I do mine similar to @hollydolly.

I add some onion, a chopped apple or an applesauce snack cup and a few caraway seeds.

The girls are getting together later to bake Christmas cookies at my granddaughters house. I will do the vacuuming and take a shower on my alone time.
Tomorrow we are celebrating Christmas as a family at granddaughters house. Just family. We missed all of this for 25 years while in Florida. Making up for lost time now.

Have any of you folks ever tried Factor meals? Are they worth the money? We tried for Meals on Wheels but apparently we are not eligible for some reason. I am preparing all our meals now and frozen dinners are getting old although I do make homemade meals at times. Some good, others terrible. I do enjoy cooking but would enjoy some help once in awhile.

I haven’t tried any of them but lately several advertisements for them have turned up in my FB feed.

It would be a pain to manage but I’m pretty sure that you could accept the reduced price introductory offer for a new one every month for a year.

This is one that I’ve seen recently, don’t know a thing about them but they start out with a 50% trial offer.

Please keep up posted, this is something that we may all want to consider at some point.

Another thought to consider is talking to the family and see if you could have them take on a meal a week or a couple meals a month and pay them for their trouble instead of paying a company for mediocre meals.

If they cook for their families it wouldn’t be much more work to prepare a couple extra servings.

Good luck!

I haven't tried them but a girl from work tried them. The portions are extremely small. I know my father had tried several different companies. The portions were too small and they wanted too much money and then there were delivery issues. I think Factor has it set up where you can get a trial box. You might look into that.

Good early morning everyone. 7:10 am here and just getting light out. Today we are going to granddaughters house to celebrate Christmas and have a turkey dinner. Christmas Day, a tradition, we meet at daughter’s house for breakfast. Looking forward to being back here, in Poughkeepsie, and being able to be with family again. I must admit though, I hate the cold weather. These old bones are aching in places I didn’t know I had..🤨
