National Pickle Day

It’s National Pickle Day! Pickles have been a popular food for thousands of years. In 2030 B.C., cucumbers were imported from India to the Tigris Valley. There, they were first preserved and eaten as pickles.
In ancient Egypt, people consumed pickles for their nutritional value and because they were thought to enhance beauty. Cleopatra attributed her good looks to her full diet of pickles. Centuries later, Napoleon believed that pickles offered health benefits for his armies, so he offered a huge cash prize to anyone who was able to preserve them safely.
Today we honor the culinary history of pickles. This versatile vegetable can be enjoyed as a condiment, snack, or side dish. Stock up on your favorite kind of pickles and celebrate National Pickle Day!

We're not big pickle eaters so we don't have any in the house right now, will have to run out and get some.:p

I had a Claussen with my grilled ham and cheese for dinner tonight!!!

I wish I could find a bottle of Mt. Olive gherkins sweetened with Splenda, it won't be Thanksgiving without them!!!

I like most kinds of pickles and always have a varied supply on hand in the fridge.

I just had some pickle relish on my sandwich this afternoon. Does that count?

(It's getting dark here now (5 PM). Better get out on the patio to see that giant moon.

Tonight's the night................as the honeymooners always rejoice.)

We had 2 kosher dill slices with our sandwiches today at the diner.

I love Mt. Olive baby kosher dills, but not the sweet kind. And I like my pickles whole. Slices and spears get too soggy in the juice for me.

OMG pickle juice from the fridge on a hot day after coming inside from playing!! Drove my mother crazy- "don't drink that!" while I glugged from the jar in front of the open refrigerator door.

Chopped ham and pickle sandwiches were a favorite at birthday parties back in the 50's. Remember?

We always have a jar of Garlic Dills, Bread n' Butter, and I think there's some Hamburger Dills hiding in the frig also.

Kind of makes me a little hungry thinking about it. Anyone ever have a pickle with their morning coffee?

I had dill pickle chips on my grilled cheese sandwich yesterday to celebrate. Yummmmm.

I'd sure like to try that experiment and see a pickle glow in the dark.

I recently found out about hanging a pickle on the Christmas tree and bought a pickle ornament. I saw that it was a German custom and wondered why my Dad never knew that. He was a German immigrant. I think it is a neat custom. Too bad I didn't know about it when my kids were little.
