Now Another Annoying Robot Feature Coming To Our Vehicles

Saw this yesterday on Motorweek. A camera in your steering wheel that sounds an alarm every time you take your eyes off the road! So adding this ALERT takes the idea of a pleasant drive in the country a thing of the past. Stop and think when there is little traffic on the roads how many times your eyes drift off to something off to the side of the road......... BEEP BEEP. I know that some will say it will reduce the texting while driving and I agree but why do I have to tolerate this when my phone is in my pocket when I drive? Auto driver-auto brakes-auto lane monitor-eyes on the road monitor-auto truck opener- auto door opener-auto engine start. All kneel to A I. Oh, by the way, why not monitors for how drunk or stoned the drivers are?

I honestly do not understand some people thrill to have all this "help".
I do not need all these gadgets on everything at home and car etc. some do not know why is that beep or alarm going off .
I suppose a few maybe helpful for those who are distracted but I also imagine there are limitations ...... how far down the road does the car SEE .....or recognize a potential item ............vs how far can the driver see.... same goes for what if something came from the side from an unexpected area (not a road ) etc.
How far do people want to go? perhaps some simply should not drive if unable.
What if there is A.I. failure .....can this person function without?
A.I. is only looking for the normal possible items that were programmed.

I would believe those who chose to still attempt to text/ use phone etc on road ..........will only be given false sense of "oh well the car will beep or stop etc"

I remember when cruise control was new to some .....I was told by a friend worked for a towing company.and i saw the pictures of the outcome....
a person RENTED an RV and while on a freeway that has many curves etc he put on cruise control ( evidently thought it was auto- pilot) and walked back in the RV to make himself a snack ........... the state patrol could not quit laughing and everyone hoped he had full coverage as that thing was destroyed.

There's probably a way to turn that feature off. I'd ask the dealership to do it, though, because if it involves disengaging a connection under the hood, you might also disengage the wiper blades or a thermostat or something.

I'd be all for that, FM!

Excellent mention.

I'm willing to bet that this feature is a product of a bill passed by Congress...mandated by law. How much does everyone love the "low tire warning" thing? I find it annoying. My 2019 Tacoma has a feature that beeps if you get near the edge or your lane. It can be disabled, but I keep it on, for added safety.

Another bet: That sensors will someday be a mandated feature...to gauge driver sobriety, for law enforcement purposes.

My husband occasionally turns off the safety feature in his Toyota, because according to him, drivers like to sit right in the sweet-spot at nighttime as if to irritate the driver with the feature, because of it's lit and bright properties.

Mandates for sensors .........Yet another example of guilty regardless if you are proven innocent.

At least one sensor item used for those with DUI now (The kind you blow into to start car).....can be set off by if a person is wearing cologne.......... and will shut off engine of the car.
A friend of mine was driving a car home for someone that had this device on his car ........ my friend thought no problem, as he does not drink ..........but car kept quitting and a police officer told him "yeah your cologne is confusing the sensor".

imagine all the hand sanitizer would set this type sensor off

I got to hand it those "bros." They just can't get enough of electronic junk. I really can't blame them because their parents gave them their own smartphones when they were 4 years old & they have never looked back. Pretty soon they are going to invent some electronic thing to sense where you are hitting the toilet peeing or maybe missing & putting some on the floor. The sensor will alert the man/woman of the house (on their Apple watch, of course) so that they can hand out the appropriate punishment. Yes, mates, we are getting more silly as the years go by. Some call it progress! I call it "goodbye" common sense! HA!

Have always loved your entries, Packer!

To the point and no-nonsense.

There was a time when motor cars
were serious fun to drive,
back then they didn't have seat belts,
which help you stay alive.

They had quirky things like
running boards and trafficators too,
those were little semaphore arms
that gave the direction true.

Jessica is just like that
in two tone fancy colour,
an MG of classic vintage,
a real beauty to discover.

There's nothing more that she prefers
than to show off in the shining sun,
and be photographed by one and all:
she smiles for everyone.

This classic car has survived the years
and not been torn asunder,
not for her, the breaker's yard,
her body parts to plunder.

Despite her years she's greatly loved,
her lines to be admired,
and she can still put on a turn of speed
to get the adrenaline fired.

Out on the highway she likes to go
and keep up with the traffic.
But serious problems can arise,
when all the cars are static.

The water in her engine boils
and out the steam comes hissing,
she doesn't have a temperature fan
but it's not exactly missing.

It simply wasn't ever there
like modern cars today,
there's so much missing with vintage cars,
it's the price you have to pay.

But for all her lack of equipment
and of technology,
there's something intangible this car has,
this lovely old MG.

It's that distinct smell of old car,
of walnut and of leather,
a fragrance that's so captivating,
it doesn't get much better.

Then there's her style & grace & beauty
and class in overload,
but her greatest asset is the fun you can have,
that comes by the bucketload.

All this "gee whiz" electronics stuff being put into new cars is another reason why I'm not in any hurry to trade cars. One things for sure....at some point these features will fail, and it will be Expensive to have them fixed. I had an issue with our Impala a couple of years ago, and it took 3 trips to the dealer before they were able to properly diagnose/fix it....and I had to argue with them to get a fair price when they finally found the problem. My trusty old Dodge Dakota has none of this baloney, and that's fine with me.

If they want to install "sensors" in a vehicle, I would like to see Two....One that shuts the engine down when alcohol is detected, and Another that does the same when a cell phone is being used. Booze and cell phones probably account for half, or more, of the wrecks.

My 2019 Altima also has that. They call it "Lane Watch" or something. But, it's easy to turn off; just a button on the steering wheel.

And everyone will be lost when the satellite goes down.

Do you find the same as to what my husband finds, where it's almost as if other drivers like to toy with drivers with such?

I'll have to ask to confirm, but the button to override that safety lane-change feature in his truck in right on the dash.

Nah, I played with it a few times after I got the car, then I just left it off. It's too annoying to leave on. There is a yellow light in the corners of both front doors that lets me know when a driver is in my blind spot. That's useful & not annoying, but that "Lane Watch" thing vibrates the steering wheel, makes a groaning noise & actually turns the wheel when I touch any lines on the road above 20 mph.

On my husbands truck, a bright orange light stays lit in the corner of the outside side mirror until the vehicle in question moves out of the zone.

Myself, I don't find it irritating, but it drives hubby mad.

The feature you have on your Altima sounds like it's far more advanced than that on my husbands vehicle.

Maintenance lights can be a real pain, too, especially if they are automatically programmed and not easy to turn off. Driving along a dark road one frigid January night, a large "Maintenance Required" light kicked onto my Honda dashboard, and made me feel like my engine was about to quit. Turned out it just had reached the programmed interval for an oil change, which I had actually done earlier when the mechanic failed to reset the sensor. The light kept coming up unwanted until I learned the proper sequence of things to do to turn it off... 😟

I believe what some report as a batch of beeps going off , while you drive can be annoying, and possibly even dangerous. But so is screwing around, "multitasking", and frankly doing everything else but driving. Maybe, as Fyrefox stated , there might be another way to let drivers know of not so crucial warning beeps and lights. But you do have to admit that if you're not watching the road for a long period of time, maybe a beep isn't your greatest problem.

So we can turn these annoying features off. Wonderful! How much did we pay for them? We can no longer opt for this and that add-on instead if you want a certain one you must then enter in to a higher tier meaning you are forced to buy all the items on that higher tier. Believe the insurance lobbyists push these trinkets through,

Last Dec I actually declined the free use of a late model car ā€œloanerā€ while the 20 yr old was in for a few days of service. With the tvscreens and all the other twitchy, bi*thy stuff I didn’t feel I could learn how to drive it, let alone safely in a few days.

Thanks. I try to be honest. I'm too old for "beating around the bush" and what some call "political correctness." I prefer to call an Ace an Ace.
