I worked at a boarding school for teens in Idaho, and they did a complete background check before they hired me; so that would probably be a requirement for Denise, too, if she worked at a dorm, or similar situation.
The school I worked at was for delinquent rich kids (cost $5000 a month tuition), and most of those kids had been given all the money and material things in life; but not much in the way of attention and love.
They would always come in the kitchen to see what was on the menu for dinner, and often would enjoy helping me with the preparations. Since I was feeding about 100 people at every meal, I was always glad for the help; and the kids sometimes had their only real (sort of) taste of "helping Mom make dinner".
Often, just having someone to listen to them was an important thing, and they would come in to talk and help out, just for the company, and feeling appreciated.
