CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - An off-duty Cleveland Police officer was shot and killed in a carjacking on the city’s West Side on New Year’s Eve, Cleveland Police Union President Jeff Follmer confirmed.

The carjacking happened in the 4300 block of Rocky River Drive in Cleveland around 6 p.m., authorities said.

Cleveland EMS said crews took an approximately 27-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds to Fairview Hospital in critical condition.

Authorities said he was shot twice in the back.

Follmer confirmed the victim was a patrol officer for the Cleveland Division of Police Fifth District.

His name has not yet been released.

Those responsible are still on the loose and the car has not yet been recovered, Follmer said.

As an ex cop, you have to turn off that part of your brain to work effectively. Yes, there are bad apples but I still believe there are more good ones than bad and they just don't get enough credit nowadays.

I'm sure they appreciate them, thank you. The latest news on tv was that he graduated from high school in 2015 so that makes him younger than the first news report--maybe 25. Too young to die.

That's for sure. A lot of people running around with guns that shouldn't have them, too. Another life lost and a family made to suffer.

An old boyfriend, way back when, was a police officer. He had a lot of very shocking experiences .. the kind one would never forget throughout their lives. I used to be concerned for him.

Yes and that's why I have said before that many police officers suffer from PTSD. I think it's a job hazzard

The officer, later identified as 25-year-old Shane Bartek, was relatively new to the force and fought back but was shot twice during a robbery of his vehicle.

There will be a vigil tonight for Officer Shane Bartek who they say now was killed in the line of duty since he was trying to apprehend the assailant.

Many groups will be participating in the vigil and a march. Black on Black Crime is one who is in support of the officer and are friends of the Cleveland police.
