In the UK we have an advisory body called NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). They dish out advice on just about everything - what we should eat, how much we should drink, how much exercise we should get, how heavy we should be etc.... Their latest piece of advice was that there was no safe way to get a suntan.

Do you have similar bodies in other countries? If so how to you view them - people who give good advice that it is wise to take on board, on people who are interfering with our freedom to live as we want?

Advice is just that....it's up to the individual to take, or ignore Advice. Virtually every government or medical agency here tells us the same thing...proper diet, regular exercise, etc., etc. However, if a person wants to live on Beer and fatty food, and spend their days watching TV, that is their choice...and they will eventually see the results.

Capt, Here in California nearly all family medical providers have such a service. They are funded by the federal government (tax dollars), and in some states they are also subsidized with state tax dollars. It's true one is free to ignore this ineffectual service, but it pains me that whether we do or not, we are wasting money on it. I believe patients would rather be advised by their doctors directly, addressing their particular health issues...but I suppose that would take a bit of time off the doctor clock.

It's advice. We can take it or leave it.

Uh oh as to the suntan. I never lay out in the sun trying to tan, but over time walking, riding bikes, etc I have got a tan. Always use sunscreen but still, the sun is strong here and after nearly 3 months....

I'm not one for the sun myself, though I've been caught out on occasions in places where I didn't expect it - like Switzerland and Finland. Not much of a problem here, but I do use sunscreen on the occasional good day!

As for dishing out advice, it's a bit like horoscopes - make it general enough and it will apply to somebody. However, we are all different and as Fazefour suggests, advice should ideally be tailored to the individual.

I do my own research from reputable places when I hear some new advice.

As for sunburn, my worst was on the Isle of Skye. We weren't expecting to need sunscreen and it was spring. Very windy on our hike so didn't notice I was getting fried. My legs were swollen and I had to take cold showers as even warm water hurt.
