On 6 September, Alameda, California, officials arrested the 42-year-old Navy veteran Joseph C Roberts after DNA evidence from the autopsy of Rachel Elizabeth Imani Buckner, 27, allegedly pointed in his direction.

Earlier this summer, Buckner’s remains were found inside a bag along the shoreline near the Bay Farm Island bridge, authorities announced in a press release. Buckner’s body, which was missing its head, hands and feet, was found wrapped in black trash bags and duct tape, according to the Mercury News, which reviewed court documents.

On 30 August, following further DNA examinations, Roberts’s DNA was reportedly found on the duct tape and trash bags. A week later, police appeared at an apartment in Pleasanton where Roberts and Buckner lived.

Roberts, a Georgia native, attended Savannah State University in 2009. Years later, he claimed in several interviews that he had been wrongly accused of sexual harassment and suspended from the university.

Nathan, I know you've worked in the prison system, why do you think these guys (who murder their wives/gfriends) actually think they're going to get away with the crime?

I read a certain crime forum, and it's common to read about these types of crimes.
And, the culprit always turns out to be their husbands/boyfriends.

A few possibilities come to mind:
1. They don't think, they just do, then try to hide what they can.
2. They think they are smarter than the cops...
3. They think that they are just lucky, and nobody will know.

We held a court martial of a male Officer that killed a female Corporal back in 1980 or 81. This was before DNA, but the Trial Counsel (Prosecutor) had a boatload of evidence against the defendant. He was found guilty in less than 2 hours of deliberations.

During the proceedings, the psychiatrist that evaluated the defendant was asked why did the defendant believe he would get away with it. The psychiatrist answered saying “the defendant compartmentalized.” IOW, he didn’t consider the consequences and put the whole investigation and trial off to the side and giving it no consideration. Just as if it never happened.

I had to think about that for awhile, but then understood it.

Sometimes I wonder if they even care if they get caught. I think they just do it sometimes because they can.
