Oh!! the joy of home ownership (NOT)

It is called 'hot water on demand'. It is now commonly installed in newer homes, and can replace the traditional hot water heater in older homes. Essentially the cold water pipe passes through a box which intensively heats the water in the pipe in seconds as it passes through. This means you don't have a tank that is constantly being heated and wasting heating by gas or electricity. Much more expensive to install, but makes up for that by savings in gas and electricity. That's progress.
On a slightly different subject, we have several standard jokes that run in our family. One of them is:
when someone mentions a "hot water heater", someone else will ask "why do you need to heat hot water?" 😁

Yeah, I have heard that about water softener systems. In hard water areas they can help your plumbing a lot. Thanks for mentioning the Bosch. No matter what system you choose, you do want it to last. I was flipping channels and saw a clip from "This Old House" and they were installing a Bosch something-or-another. Tech said it was the only brand he used.
Bosch is a good brand & makes many products. The new one is what our plummer uses. Sometimes plummers don't want to install tankless because either they are not familiar with it or prefer to use the tank because it's more profitable (I think) for them. I've known a few people who were going to get a tankless only to get talked out of it by their plummer.

I hate to say it but I need to find another local plumber/family run. I think the one I have used for so long, she is getting older and well as the staff she had for so long. They have cut their hours and seem to be getting ready for retirement. She took over the business when he husband died. She went and got her master plumbers license while running the business. She sure knows her stuff but I don't think there are any children. If there were she would have had them working and preparing to take over.
The plummer we used for years was recommended to us by a friend who was a house contractor. The plummer retired & sold it to a cousin & we just went along with the cousin. They have been very good to deal with. If she retires, see who she would use if it was her.
