Old Wives Tales

Hmm - - Chicken soup actually does have a positive effect on shortening colds, as I recall. A few other popular beliefs described in the article also have some scientific basis in fact, I think. Do your own research. I'm always suspicious of articles like this one that try to debunk a slew of popularly held beliefs, at one time. Also, what works for you may not work for someone else. We all need to find our own way. Placebo effect, or not, whatever gets you through your life, is alright. (With thanks to John Lennon.)

Interesting but, where do these Old Wives come from ? I’ve not heard of half these tales

The one about eating carrots must be true......my friend's pet rabbit has never needed glasses....:D

I agree with treeguy. Not all of these are old wives tales. Some of these actually have truth to them.

It’s actually fact that turkey makes you tired.
Turkey has an amino acid it in called L’tryptophan which causes sleepiness.

Carrots contain loads of vitamin A which improves eyesight.

Mayonnaise in food will absolutely spoil faster if it’s real mayonnaise made with eggs. Eggs spoil quickly.

Dabbing a bit of whisky on an infant with teething pain would help with both numbing and as an antiseptic. It might not be great for the child itself but would definitely do the above.

Reading in dim light puts a strain on your eyes.
Anything that puts a strain on your eyes is damaging them.

Chicken soup might not cure your cold but it’s been proven to certainly help it. Bone broth is packed with nutrients which helps the immune system. Hot soup also helps clear the sinuses

Eating horseraddish might not cure a chest cold but it certainly helps greatly to clear it up quicker.

My parents always told me and my siblings not to swallow our chewing gum.I did it anyways just because I didn't believe them
As I grew older, stopped doing it tossing in the trash
