Older Children Spread the Coronavirus Just as Much as Adults, Large Study Finds

The study of nearly 65,000 people in South Korea suggests that school reopenings will trigger more outbreaks.

In the heated debate over reopening schools, one burning question has been whether and how efficiently children can spread the virus to others.

A large new study from South Korea offers an answer: Children younger than 10 transmit to others much less often than adults do, but the risk is not zero. And those between the ages of 10 and 19 can spread the virus at least as well as adults do.

Dozens of babies infected by coronavirus in Texas as state struggles to contain the spread....

“We currently have 85 babies under the age of one year in Nueces County that have all tested positive for Covid-19,” said Annette Rodriguez, director of public health for Corpus Christi Nueces County.

"These babies have not even had their first birthday yet. Please help us stop the spread of this disease," she added.

(Hope these infants won't have to endure the full-blown symptoms of this virus....so sad :( )

The article doesn't state why the babies are hospitalized. Did virus symptoms bring them in, or was virus detected during a matter-of-course testing of all patients.

Not that this isn't terrible news. It is. I'm just wondering if the babies are COVID-19 symptomatic or asymptomatic.

This baby infection is in the Corpus Christi area...for months, Corpus was low in cases, like a lot of Texas was and then, as soon as the lockdown ended it seemed they started to spike big time. Wondering about these kids, too.
Seems strange. Was it the hospital or some other common element that caused this. Going to call my friend that lives there in a canal house...see what the local "skinny" is on it. Will report back.

I'm confused. How does living in a canal house affect his understanding of the situation?

Teenagers, too. Recently it was on the local news that 3 members of the local high school's softball team tested positive.. I wondered how many friends, family members, neighbors, etc. they may have infected before they were tested. :(

Yes and how many of those you mentioned interacted with others before hearing about the infected teens??? Sad.

Ok, group. I only mentioned my friend living in a "canal house", as a sidebar...lol. Has nothing to do with the virus, hopefully for her.

Here's what I found out about the baby issues:

The 85 number was first reported Saturday by CNN, which quoted Annette Rodriguez, director of public health for Corpus Christi Nueces County, on Friday: “We currently have 85 babies under the age of one year in Nueces County that have all tested positive for COVID-19.

“These babies have not even had their first birthday yet,” she said. "Please help us stop the spread of this disease.”

That quote was later reported by The Texas Tribune and other outlets. As concern over the number spread, Canales, the top elected official in Nueces County, clarified that it was a cumulative number since the pandemic began.

"Stating this number during our press conference led many to believe that we had a sudden surge in infants under the age of one testing positive," she said. "We have NOT had a sudden surge of 85 infants testing positive."

Thank you for the clarification.

I'm wondering if giving babies a Covid test is now standard for hospital admissions. Hmmm.
I bet you're right. Anyone admitted to a US hospital nowadays is probably tested for Covid as a matter of course. Just to not miss anything. The virus is still such a new entity and docs aren't clear about all the symptoms. Not that babies could indicate whether their sense of smell or taste is altered.

Better to be safe than sorry.
