Hi there fellow retirees. I didn't plan to retire when I did but here I am, retired n completely unprepared! Living a good quality of life is important to me.now more than ever. I worked from home for many years n had a few good friends I would see from time to time. In the past several years I've lost family n friends, too many. My children are all in their 40s n busy w their own lives. I'm admitting here for the first time that I'm LONELY! I can keep busy only so long each day to block out the feeling but it's always there. Having friendships n interesting conversations with ppl who can relate is just as important as food n water to ppl like me. I offer my time n attention to anyone who can relate to any of this. Let's chat.

Hi @Denisel, congratulations on your retirement!

Welcome @Denisel! I also retired early due to Covid when my company called me in May 2020 and advised they would be terminating my position in June 2020. I also worked from home for 14 years and managed a group of salespeople. I'll admit I was ready to leave because the stress and the 24/7 emails had affected my quality of life. I haven't missed it.

Many say that you need hobbies to fall back on but I find myself spending more time at the gym, more time walking outside and just being in the moment. I never heard birds chirping before and I was always the one at the grocery store wringing my hands because the line wasn't moving fast enough. That no longer happens. I was worried about how I would fill up my days, but they seem to go by pretty quickly. I did read a lot of self-help books at the beginning of my retirement to just make me a better person. I think establishing a routing helps as well. I am in my home office in the morning watching the news and having my coffee, lunch at home, then going to the gym and running errands. It makes me feel like I still have a "schedule".

Re: your loneliness, I was in Sales and managed a group of salespeople so I had constant interactions with people. Where I live in Dallas, people are very friendly so I frequently strike up conversations with strangers. I also find this forum a great outlet for that. There are such great members here with incredible life experiences that they are happy to share. I participated in a Coffee Klatch earlier today where I had the chance to Zoom with other forum members. I felt like they were friends I've known forever because we have been posting back and forth for months. It was great.

I hope that you will find a sense of solace and belonging here, as I have.

Welcome, Denisel. We retired a few years ago. I'm not on my own but having DH (dear husband) home ALL the time turned out to be more stressful than I anticipated. Thus, I managed to find several groups to attend and stayed busy all week! Also, we moved upon retiring, so we didn't know anyone in our new home. The groups were a great way to meet new friends - and I have. Even one couple that we now socialize with - rarely, & with masks! Since I do knitting, embroidery and other fabric/fiber crafts, I found a lot of groups and projects - try the library, your town's Recreation Dept, a national guild - with local groups, a place to volunteer..... oh the list goes on. Since we've been at home for the Covid duration, it's going to be hard to get back to all of that - we've gotten too lazy - but I've stayed in touch with new friends by phone. Best wishes - find something you ENJOY!!
