Thousands plan to attend Port Dover for this week’s Friday the 13th

Thousands of people are planning to go to Port Dover Friday for an event that started back in the 80s recurring every Friday the 13th.

No matter what month or season, the port in Norfolk County hosts closes up Main and Nelson Streets and throws a big celebration drawing many motorcyclists from across the province to attend.

“We’ve seen anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 people attend the event,” says Norfolk County Mayor Amy Martin.

I read somewhere a long time ago that Friday the 13th was an arbitrary date picked to execute prisoners in the Middle Ages. Not sure if that's true, but I guess that would make some sense that a date would get a bad rep.

Now, not all bad things happen on this date. My Mom won a contest on the 13th, I won the elementary school candy sales for the most sold one year & my daughter was born on the 13th.

I look at it, along with black cats, as good luck. Just me.

I had to run over to the convenience store for the morning paper, coffee and a muffin. Came home, parked in the driveway because I was going back out shortly and when I got out of my truck, I saw a big dog kind of jogging up the sidewalk and he was coming towards me. I wondered what was his intention. He was panting and looked hot. No leash, but he did have a collar on with a tag.

The dog came into my driveway and I said Hi fella. He jumps up on me and when I pushed him off, he took a bunch of skin from my arm with him. He had large claws. I bled pretty bad and before I went into the garage to get a wet rag, I saw a maybe 10 year old boy running and yelling for Socrates. I guessed it was his dog and later found out it was. He had the leash in his hand. I asked him why did he take the leash off of his dog. He said because the dog wanted to run.

I took down his name and gave him a paper with my name and address on it and asked him to ask his dad to come see me. I am a nice guy and unless it develops into an infection, I plan on letting the incident slide, otherwise, if an infection appears, I may expect him to pay any medical charges that my insurance doesn’t pay, which I doubt if there will be any. It was very painful when I washed it off with peroxide.
