On being a "Woke parent"- a cynical view

"The thought just occurred to me" that whilst trying to keep ourselves young, at least in mind and spirit, a thread looking at the sayings or catchphrases of the younger generation might be worth a go here(?). .

I had to do a tiny bit of research but here is a Woke parent's statement as to their attitude to life:-
"I don't want to settle for regular happiness, I'm looking for genuine joy!"

Personally I'd always settle for "regular happiness" (if its a concept pretend to understand for a moment), although my child brought me far more joy than any pain she's so far managed. I doubt however, that a "Woke parent" would recognise my parenting skills as bring in line with theirs, but I don't want to sound too sceptical, as I'm sure the younger parents wish to do the right thing, "even if they're doomed to fail"!

Woke is, according to the urban dictionary, the act of being pretentious about how much you care about a social issue. Sounds about right to me.

But, having awakened in Texas this morning, I have to agree that life is pretty good here.

Use that definition carefully Carol. It's not the mainstream definition of Woke, and it might get you into trouble. It was a 2018 definition on Urban Dictionary, and it's evolved considerably since then.

My kids use the word woke frequently...it's part of their lexicon, and is especially meaningful to them right now as they speak out about social awareness, black lives matter and other biases they feel passionate about.

In normal parlance, it means alert to injustice in society, especially racism.

Woke is a slang term that is easing into the mainstream from some varieties of a dialect called African American Vernacular English (sometimes called AAVE). In AAVE, awake is often rendered as woke, as in, “I was sleeping, but now I'm woke.” 'Woke' is increasingly used as a byword for social awareness.
 
Yes, we need more buzz words to keep things stirred up. I think most people who keep up with current events and all the moronic "influencers" know what the NEW definition of "woke" is. Not a word you will ever hear me utter, when "social awareness" is a perfectly good term. Of course, I seldom get "TRIGGERED" but occasionally I "CLAP BACK". :sneaky::rolleyes:
 
You've left me a bit baffled there(TRIGGERED, and CLAP BACK :sneaky:?)

I did hear this word used, and apparently young people use it to mean something other than its more conventional meaning, "GASSED"! :rolleyes: .

Could mean good, or something like that, though I'm not sure. ?:unsure:
