If you have a sense of humour anything like mine I thought this discussion I had with a work colleague might amuse you.
A large metal door has been giving us some trouble recently, and we suspected it wouldn't close properly because it was out of line or slightly warped (having attempted to judge how straight it was by both our eyes and using a long brush handle or "brush stale" to the technically minded
).
Anyway, the engineer came to have a look at it and apparently placed a small spirit level on it, about a foot long, and declared the door was fitted correctly because using this device it was perpendicular (ignoring the fact an eight foot high door might not be easily assessed using such a small measuring tool, or rule).
My friend and I then mused how many other reputedly curved surfaces might appear straight or flat measured similarly, and decided this may be the way those believing the Earth is flat came to their conclusions(?)
We even thought a Guinness book of world records might be attempted by heading off over land to as far as you might wish to go, all the while checking that the spirit level still showed the Earth being flat. Now you may say small things amuse small minds, and you'd be right, and yet you hear so many things these days that make you question your own reason, this proposition doesn't seem so daft as it once might have done to me
