One Word For Success In All Diets

"Discipline" Everyone has started a diet then quit many times over in their lives. Millions of diets and dieters and millions of failures. I wonder how many of us have pledged to go on a diet knowing the word "diet" means temporary. So we know deep down inside this thing we enter in to is only by definition temporary and it is almost a relief knowing so. We are overweight because of the way we have chosen to live our lives. We have all made long term and even life long commitments to other aspects of our lives and some have been successful. We quit smoking and drinking easier than stupid eating. Part of the reason for that is the constant exposure inside the home and outside to consume junk food, not so with cigarettes. "All You Can Eat", "Triple Cheeseburgers", "Stuffed Crust Pizzas" and good old "Mac & Cheese" ads are everywhere and constant. We have all heard the word "diet" is self destructing as opposed to "changing our lifestyles." I am among the guiltiest so don't reply as if I am on the outside looking in. I think watching so many die every day from Covid has had a serious impact on me. I am high on the list for a first-in-line vaccination because of my weight and the more that sinks in the more I am ashamed to know that.

I'm right there with you!

I do fine for a while then I revert back to the comfortable habits of a lifetime.

All any of us can do is keep trying to find out what works for us and build on those small successes.

If you come up with any tips and ideas for lasting healthy changes please pass them along.

Good luck!

"You can't keep blaming yourself. Just blame yourself once, and move on." - Homer Simpson, Matt Groening

I think if you look around you can see why permanent weight loss is so hard.......
it is different for many ... what may work wonders for one person does nothing for another .......yet the diet/ fitness industry makes billions on diets and failures....
Every industry( gyms/ diet companies/ medical industry) around diets do not want a fix .......they certainly do not want people with discipline.......they want to convince people diets will work and in short term might but in long term no.....

There are billions made for new pills/ plans / gimmicks then surgeries and body sculpting...... desperate people shelling out money only to be disappointed. Then chasing the next hot item......

Important to me is the fact now in this epidemic my give a damn attitude about my weight can kill me. Not that I didn't know my weight was not healthy. What always ticked me off was being 20-30 lbs. over is treated as horrible and suicide when I know it is not true. The constant nagging by everyone about the "ideal weight" can drive one crazy and is detrimental in many ways. Anyhow, I'm not going to find myself lying in a hospital bed hooked up to hoses and wires saying to myself "If I only had the brains to do something about it." My mom died young because she could not stop smoking and drinking. I used to look at her and shake my head as the smoke left her mouth with a drink in her hand. I always felt she believed early death only happened to others. For us it's easy to hunker down and avoid crowds, wear masks, etc. but not doing what else it takes to survive this Covid is downright laziness. No diet for me, just some changes.

It’s not fair that most take-away food is so delicious. The joy of eating is one of the few pleasures left when you reach old age, and why bother anyway, just enjoy the food you love. That’s what I believed up until a few years ago. My blood tests were getting my doctor worried and I had to start taking statins, she also pointed out all the horrible things that could happen to me if I continued to eat the things I love, especially home-made cakes, and my favourite - scones with jam and cream.

So I decided to stop, no more junk food and very little processed foods. The thing that helped me achieve my weight goal was buying some bathroom scales – first thing in the morning I’m eager to see the result of yesterday’s nosh up – if it goes up, I cut back that day, if it goes down or stays around that magic number, I’m pretty happy with myself. :)

The answer is to design a long-term diet plan which suits you. Calorie counting works best, then you don't need to deprive yourself of anything. Just stick to a certain number of calories each day.

Yup, calorie counting helped me and my hubby to lose weight (we have an app together that we do on our iphones). You would be surprised at the number of calories that are in some take-out food - a whole days worth. Over the years I steadily cut down on processed food and it does change the way you eat. It does help that I can cook (and hubby can eat) but we both feel so much better and are proud of ourselves. We also walk about an hour every day.

It does no good telling someone you need to do this or do that - it has to come from your own self. Find something that motivates you and do it bit by bit; yes, you will fail at times but keep going...the benefits are worth it.

Carbs put the weight on. Calories are everywhere carbs are not.

Here is an example of following "diets" as opposed to smart eating. Good timing on the subject this morning on a local channel. The subject of a special report was what is the worst food you can eat for weight gain. Judge for yourself how moronic this is. Potato chips was given as the worst food you eat for weight gain. How much weight? How about one and one half pounds over four years! Many questions, first how is that bad? Second, if that is something to worry about can't that amount be lost in a single day? Third, know that in ten years you will have gained 3 3/4 pounds. That may be horrible for fashion models that throw up after every meal consisting of one ounce of fish and a single flower of broccoli. Also, to the news station staff that came up with this you left out how many chips. You left out how often. You left out for men or women. Last, in the past week I lost 2.2 lbs. and three times for lunch I had maybe 8 chips with my sandwich and pickle.
