Online Wills ??

Since we married in 1969 we have always visited a solicitor to have our wills done properly. Over the years we have made changes when the children and grandchildren came along. I advise everyone who has property and a reasonable amount of money to leave to their surviving family, to ensure they have proper advice from a trained lawyer.

We've done two wills, both through lawyers at my firm. The last one about a year ago was pretty extensive as we took the opportunity to set up trusts at the same time, as well as durable powers of attorney, healthcare proxies and advanced directives. Glad to have it all behind me. Took a long time and was costly, but think we did the right thing.

Yes, we did an online will. Easy to do, saved online also. Problem we had was getting it notarized. People just didn't want to get 'involved' in such a complicated thing as a will. Weird to us. We're rewriting our will this year and have decided to visit an att'y.

All a Notary does is certify that it was you that signed the document. The contents are not his/her concern.

We need to redo our wills, and have talked about sites like that, but I think we'll go the traditional route and use an attorney. Probably worth the extra money to do it face to face and get it right.

I agree. I've been a notary for about 40 years, and all I am required to do is be sure the person who is signing the document is who they say they are. I can notarize a paper napkin if I see it being signed in front of me and I am assured the signatories are who they say they are.

I've had people bring something that has already been signed to me wanting to have it notarized -- I can't do that -- I have to see it being signed. But I don't need to know or care what the document says or whether or not it is a valid whatever it is. I'm just certifying the signer is the signer.
