Saturday wife & I drove 2 hrs to reach diving location. My car panel lights, blinkers, speedometer and gas gauge all shutdown making driving difficult.
My gut warned me this was not a good idea, however, I just drove 2 hours to complete open water certification and besides my instructor put a lot effort in making this happen for me.
First off, the instructor added too much weight making it difficult to maneuver. For the first time I used my new 100 cu ft Farber steel air cylinder, hood, gloves and new mask. All of these things affected the dive including physical exhaustion.
I attempted to perform the simple skill of regulator retrieval but I could not locate my regulator to put in my mouth and breath again. I ran out of air and the instructor had to force his regulator in my mouth to breath again. We were 20 ft below the surface. Fortunately my instructor prevented me from swimming to the surface as a natural response to get air.
My instructor towed me to the exit ramp where we started from. I was’t scared per se but not being able to breath is discomforting. It was not until the following day I decided to continue diving.
