Osteoporosis medication

Just learned that I have osteoporosis... so my doctor is suggesting one of the osteo medications to prevent more bone loss and rebuild bone.. My Part D medicare plan pays for Fossamax and Boniva.. (generic)... Not sure I want to start these as there are some pretty scary side effects.. Anyone on these meds or other Osteroporosis med? What is your experience.

I was prescribed something like Fosamax, I don't recall the name of it. It really messed up my stomach, and one of the many warnings on it said you must remain upright for 30 minutes after taking it so it can't back up into your esophagus and damage it. My dentist had a fit when told I was taking it -- he had experienced two patients who suffered degeneration in their jaw bones after taking it. I quit taking it.

I was diagnosed with osteopenia, which is supposedly a forerunner of osteoporosis.

I would not take those medications again, and would first try managing the problem with diet and absorbable calcium. I'd do careful research about taking those meds. I think they may cause more problems than they correct.

I agree... I'm not inclined to take this garbage. I will continue with my Calcium.. and vitamin D3

I take Caltrate.. which is calcium citrate with D3..magnesium and zinc, I also take an additional D3 capsule.. I have managed to keep my D3 blood level at 50 which is optimal.

Most Dexascans are done post menopausal... or insurance will likely not pay. Therefore.. the chances of a woman being osteoporotic post menopause are extremely high.. especially small framed white women. I had my first at age 62 and it showed me to be osteopenic. This one shows that my left femoral neck has progressed slightly over the line from osteopenia to osteoporosis. Not unexpected or abnormal IMO.. this is aging..

If able I would go with some kind of weight bearing exercise and yes stick with some vitamins. The benefits of calcium and other vitamins are from proper absorption so things like taking calcium with magnesium and/or D is critical.
