Our efficient government at work....

Does this even seem possible? What happened to all that money? Room for improvement. I’d say so.

$1.4 billion worth of stimulus checks was sent to more than 1 million dead Americans, a congressional watchdog said yesterday.
• That happened partially because the Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which was in charge of sending out stimulus checks, didn’t have access to the Social Security Administration’s set of death records.
So who is this watchdog that would dare hold the government accountable? The Government Accountability Office (GAO), which released a 403-page report evaluating Washington’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The conclusion: room for improvement

It's unbelievable to me that the Treasury didn't have access to the Social Security death file. During my working years, our IT folks had access to the SS death records and it was routine to bump files against it as one of the final steps in any large project. IMO it speaks to the lack of knowledge/experience that our government employees and elected officials have in writing the specifications and managing the details of these massive projects.

What I would like to see are the statistics on how many of the checks have been cashed and how many are still outstanding.

I suppose that even if some of the checks did get cashed the money is being used to stimulate the economy.

If they have a joint account with a son/daughter, it will go there with direct deposit...
I heard one of these sons on TV last night and he said he's been trying for months to have the check returned but the gov't has not yet taken it back. So, he must leave the money untouched in the account until they do.

I've been convinced, for a long time, that at least 25% of the tax money sent to Washington is wasted on inefficiency, and bad financial management. If our government had to operate on the same basis as responsible individuals and corporations, we would probably see a substantial decrease in taxes, and have little or no national debt.

As soon as the stimulus was announced people were impatient, the system wasn’t prepared for it. I don’t know how many people I heard asking.....where’s my check?
