Outcomes may vary by drug used to treat macular degeneration

One of the two most common drugs used to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD) appears better than the other, a new, small study suggests.

Among 106 patients with "wet" age-related macular degeneration, 50% of those treated with aflibercept (Eylea) could be weaned off the drug after one year, compared with only 17% of those treated with bevacizumab (Avastin), researchers found.

I have had ongoing AMD since 2017 and am currently being treated with both of those drugs. I get Eylea shots in my right eye and Avastin in my left. The Medicare protocol allows use of the much more expensive Eylea drug (~$ 3000 per injection) IFF treatment with Avastin (~$50 per injection) has been unsuccessful after treatment for >one year. Currently my left eye is still more or less OK (vision about 20-40) while my right eye is pretty much trash. Although I still have a drivers license, I no longer drive.

Anybody know if Medicare covers this?
I've been having that treatment over the past few months. My wife says it was our Medicare that paid for it.

I've had two visits so far in which they injected some meds into my eye. It wasn't painful. It's just uncomfortable to have someone sticking a needle in your eye.

If you can get the treatment, don't hesitate. Uncomfortable or not, it's better than going blind, which will happen if unchecked.

Ain't been here but about an hour and I screwed up already.

What I have is Macular Degeneration, not astigmatism. And the latter is not covered with Medicare.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go pound my head against the dining room wall for about an hour until I wake up. (Not even a damn hour and I screw up already.)

Don't worry about it.... hope the treatment is successful.

No concern over discomfort or pain
My tolerance is rather high

So, with your treatments, have experienced any improvement, or stemming the tide of degeneration?
