The California Highway Patrol made near 600 dui arrests this July 4 week so far.

I'm not a fan of check points but am a fan of seeing drunk drivers in the slammer even if just over night. Drunk driving, bar hopping, clubbing comes in cycles which usually end when enough the drunks are taken off the road wether it be death, prison or the medical consequences of excessive and stupid drinking catch up to them. Seems like a new batch of drunks just got taught their first lesson.

Many drunks act on impulse and/or don't care except for their own gratification. Planning to use a taxi, uber or designated driver is too much work for many of them. Or they think they are above the fray ie they aren't drunks, don't drive drunk or they "drive better when drunk".
 

It's the same where I live.

The police put on a major push and clog the courts, create a headline, etc...

The thing that bothers me is the selective law enforcement/deterrent around holidays or when our local law enforcement has a grant and is working with other law enforcement agencies. They seem to be able to identify and arrest people during those periods of high visibility but the rest of the time they appear to be reactive.

I'm a firm believer in The Broken Window theory and believe that if the small quality of life crimes were dealt with quickly and harshly the number of larger crimes would be reduced or at least shift to an area that is not so vigilant.
 
It's only when the police put on a blitz that you see so many arrests.

There are all kinds of infractions that take place when there is no blitz on.

Even if they announce a blitz, the numbers drop.

I'm concerned in Canada now. They have legalized marijuana for recreational use. I'm sure there will be those who combine the 'recreation'.
 
The SCOTUS has ruled that although DUI checkpoints are legal, police must forewarn drivers of where and when checkpoints will be held.

Additionally, drivers have the right to avoid (not evade) checkpoints, if done legally. Drivers do not have to answer questions if asked. And, unless there is probable cause, drivers do not have to allow police to do a search of their vehicle.

The edge here goes to drivers who are DUI or buzzed. I never kept a record of the number of DUI arrests. I would even hate to guess. Some drunks have been mean, others comical. I’ve seen drunks vomit on themselves and in their vehicles. I even had one man die of a heart attack during his arrest and while in my custody.

Women are no exception. They have tried to bribe me with money and/or sex. I have even had a few “ladies” show me their breasts. One lady was so intoxicated that she got down on the ground and started to walk around on all fours while barking like a dog. When I showed the video at her trial, she laughed really loud, until the judge handed down the sentence.
 
Drunk drivers have caused some of the worse accidents that I ever investigated. Young people that have little to no resistance to alcohol have been involved in some of the worse of the worse. For most law enforcement officers, it’s incredibly tough to have to go to a teen’s home to give their parents the bad news. Mothers and fathers alike become instantly traumatized when given the news that their child was killed in a vehicle crash with alcohol involved.

Back in about 2000, I investigated an accident on the interstate where a motorcyclist ran his bike under a semi. The cyclist’s BAC was 1.6 or thereabouts. He almost decapitated himself. The driver of the semi had no idea of the accident until other drivers were finally able to get his attention and he pulled over.

Back in the ‘50’s, my mother lost her sister to a drunk driver, who walked away from the accident. She was with her boyfriend out on a date when the drunk crossed the centerline causing the crash. Her boyfriend was treated and released at the hospital with a broken leg. My mother never did get over losing her sister. I always felt bad for her. We laid flowers on her grave on each of her birthdays.

Drinking and driving is a bad idea and just plain stupid. If we don’t care about ourselves, we should at least care about others.

Sorry to hear that. Having to experience or live with a drunk is bad enough but losing someone to a drunk driver-ugh. I had family hit by a drunk driver, they survived but some those injuries were present/with them the rest of their lives.

The problem is drunks are selfish to begin with. Their personal satisfaction is the only thing that matters so I doubt many have respect for others. They might have regrets after the fact but it is their selfishness that got them there in the first place.

Thanks for your input. I would like to add that back in that era, drunk driving and having a fatal crash was not treated the same as it is today. After I became a State Trooper, I happened to be in the courthouse of the county where my Aunt was killed and decided to look up the adjudication of the driver’s trial. The trial was stopped during the first hour. It seems that the driver took a plea deal of 6 months in the county prison, $1500.00 fine and loss of license.

Today, drunk driving is treated much more severe in court and if a fatality or fatalities are involved, the sentence will probably be much more severe, as it should be. Believe me, it’s the worse thing a law officer has to do when they have to get parents out of bed to inform them that their kid was killed by a drunk driver. They seem to know when they answer the door that we aren’t there to have a conversation. The look on their face haunts me to this day.

It's not just a state that has had a lot of drunk driving arrests. A Wisconsin man arrested a 9th time for drunk driving.

This is why jail, not just rehab should be mandated because it will give them several months or years to sober up. Maybe jail doesn't have all the psyhcobabble but it has no alcohol minus smuggled drug. And the drunk is taken out of the environment which enables or motivates them to drink.
