Over-Reacting Golf Fans?

When I'm watching a golf tournament on TV, occasionally a golfer will miss a long putt and end up with the ball half a foot from the cup.

He taps it in, of course, and then the gallery gives him a round of applause as though he sank it from the original distance.

Why? It takes no skill to sink a 6-inch putt! I guess I'm not familiar with golfing "ettiquette".

Golf, my favorite game! It has rationally been a game of manners and etiquette with common courtesy tossed in, except when I have a bad day on the course. It has lately become more of a circus on the stadium courses with grandstands around some holes that seat thousands of drunken fans participating in a game where you can get very up close and personal with the major stars. The rules are intensive for both players and fans, but it is changing fast

Hmmn.! It depends if he was putting for birdie or par. If he sunk the par you would have hear more enthusiastic applause than an applause for 'nice try' too bad it didn't go in.

It's like the applause near the finish line of a race. Even the guy finishing last gets a round of applause.

Trust me. Under pressure even a six inch putt isn't easy.
