Ow! Cracked skin around my thumbs.

Since misery loves company, it was reassuring to hear that other people have also suffered from this problem, which I’ve also heard referred to as skin fissures. I think that the tendency to get these painful finger cracks especially during the winter months may be genetic, as my mother also got them. I get them so badly that the cracks if untreated will actually bleed.

Things I’ve used include NuSkin Liquid Bandage, a brush-on liquid sold at places like Walmart that will seal the crack until it heals.

If you can find it, there’s also Zim’s Crack Crème, a herbal remedy with an intoxicating smell available in liquid or cream. Just don’t tell people that you’re doing Crack, or you may need legal representation… 🤪

the best thing I’ve found for the cracks I get on my thumbs is called Newskin liquid bandage. It looks and smells like clear nail polish and stings at first but it’s the best thing I’ve found for those little cracks. Seals them, no infection and they don’t hurt any more. Mine just started up a bit with the colder weather.
Me too, that's what I use.

This happens to me every time the weather gets cold, and then through the winter. No matter how much I put lotion on my hands my skin cracks usually around my thumbs on the edges of the nail, but also sometimes around the other fingers, and even occasionally on my knuckles.

my hands aren’t immersed in water other than to wash them a few times through the day. It never happens during the summer. I’ve tried various OTC remedies for cracked skin. I’ve taken supplements, beyond what I normally take, to try and solve the problem from within. Nothing works.

Does anyone else experience this? If you do, have you found a solution?
Stick your thumbs a couple of times a day into a jar of Vaseline. Or try a tube of Aloe Vera cream. I have been lately using a type of cream containing cortisone.

If you apply these on your thumb 2 or 3 times a day, your cracks will be closed inside of a week. This is what I have done for decades because I have the same problem.

I actually suffered from cracking hands badly as we cleaned parts with alcohol. I was leaving work, pouring hand cream into playtex gloves and sticking my hands in them.

I did that for three months. Never got infected as I was soaked with alcohol. Thank God I never had to do that again.

I work with my hands most every day, all day, and I apply Bag Balm every night to my hands, knees and elbows. Makes a huge difference. No more torn cuticles, or dry skin. Doesn't do too much for those errant hammer blows, but for most other things, it's good stuff.

I've heard Udder Balm works good

little weird, but, maybe worth a shot
cows are happy

I learned the following from an old farmer back when I worked on the farm.

Take Vaseline or a product called “Bag Balm” and befor you go to bed, spread the product liberally all over your fingers. Put an old pair of socks on your hands and go to bed. In the morning, remove the socks, wash your hands with a mild soap like Ivory and after drying apply a good quality hand cream with oils in it. Also don’t forget to drink plenty of water in the winter. Air is dryer and with being in a heated home also contributes to dryness.

Bag Balm is a product we used on the farm to rub on a cow’s teats to keep them from freezing of becoming chapped.

That is very painful for such a small nick, I know as I have
got one place on my right fore finger that is like this.

My mother suffered from this, through most of her 70s, I
would visit her often and she had little bits of bandages
wrapped round her fingers, after many years, she convinced
her Doctor to give her some tests and the results showed
that she was allergic to Lanolin, the main component in the
creams that he was prescribing, the cream was changed and
her finger were cured,

So Ronni, get an allergy check if you can, just to find out if
you are the same, allergic to the cure!

Mike.

I get the same problem every winter. I live in the middle of Canada, we get a lot of snow and we get a lot of dry weather. Creams don't work for me; "Tea Tree" oil seems to help but it's not a fool-proof help.
