Oxygen Required

I'm 88 and use Samsung smart watches with 1 Samsung phone. Those watches keep track of my oxygen level in the day AND in the night when I am asleep. They detected that I have a condition known as Hypoxemia - Low Oxygen. Oxygen is supposed to always stay above 95%. My Samsung health application runs on my watch and passes that information to the phone.

I have noticed that, when I sleep, my Oxygen ALWAYS drops to less than 95% EVERY NIGHT. If it drops to 60%, I'd be dead in 10 seconds. Under 95% one starts to have brain cells die which causes dementia, Alzheimer's Disease and death. I have already developed Mild Cognition Impairment which is the first sign of brain death. The condition is known as Hypoxemia.

My Geriatrician told me on 4/21/2023 that he expects me to die in one year. Now I know why. I will die from brain DEATH if I do nothing about my problem. Thus, I ordered 2 Oxygen masks and 6 Oxygen containers. I will start using them every night as I sleep. By the way, President Ronald Reagan had that problem and right now President Jimmy Carter is with hospice as he also is dying from brain death. In his case cancer was the result and the cancer is causing his brain cells to die.

The irony is that without those Samsung watches and Samsung phone I never would have known this was happening to me. Of course at 88 I WILL die soon of something anyway since most American men die at 76.

That is very smart thinking.
Do you have to have a doctors note or prescription to get oxygen tanks etc?

Well I am not the end all be all medical person here….but your saturation does NOT have to remain at 95 percent. Many many persons with chronic lung problems such as COPD walk around in the mid 80’s and function pretty well. So do not freak out if you can not maintain above 95. Now…60’s and your functional…your monitor is incorrect. Take a few deep breaths and see where you are.

I can't help to wonder how accurate they are, or whether they could be relied upon or trusted. I think my obvious question would be, does the medical profession rely on them?
I don’t have the answer for this, just an opinion. These can alert a person to a possible problem and the medical system will probably be willing looking at it, no different than any other symptoms you tell them about.

After reading this today, I did the Oxygen reading. It was a bit low. I did notice build up of some body lotion on the back. Cleaned it and the reading was better.

My husband has AFib and it can alert for that. Apple watches are expensive so it’s highly unlikely they will recommend them but they do ask if you have one. The accuracy is not perfect. A friend was feeling poorly for ages. She bought an Apple Watch just because she wanted one. First day wearing it indicated she had AFib. She just finished up the surgery for it.

You might want to get an Oximeter. Available from Amazon and maybe your doctor. Insert your finger and in a few seconds it gives you your oxygen level and pulse. One of the dangers of a lower than normal oxygen level is that your heart rate can speed up to get more oxygen to your brain, and that can be hard on your heart. Follow your doctors advice and don’t give up, there is all sorts of life extension research underway.

I have a home device called a oxygen up take meter, which you put a finger into, and in about ten seconds it shows the percentage of oxygen in your blood stream and your heart rate on the little screen. I had a pacemaker implanted in March of this year. Before the pacemaker my average O2 percentage number was 89 percent, (I have COPD ) now it is 97 percent every day. The pacemaker is the best thing that I have had done in my elderly years, because it has brought down my heart rate, my blood pressure, and my breathing is way better now. I went back to the hospital out patient heart clinic last week for a check up. All good, and the technician adjusted the pacemaker's settings a bit lower, and they will see me in a year. The pacemaker battery will last about 9 years,. before it needs to be replaced. The cost to me ? Nothing. Ontario Health Care pays 100 percent of the costs. Jimb.

Approximately 25 years ago in Tijuana, Mexico, my o2 level was constantly shown on a big display on the wall. It was constantly at 99 the whole time. This morning I checked my oximeter, which hasn't been used for quite a long time, and the readings on my right hand fingers were faint and erratic. The ring finger on my left hand showed a much stronger reading, mostly at 99, with heart rate ranging from 47 to 60 and averaging 54.

Personally I would not be concerned with an O2 reading of 95 or so. In the high 80s would be more concerning. If my reading was low then I'd keep breathing normally in a relaxed manner, routinely practice holding my breath, do more aerobic types of exercise, and keep eating healthy foods. I would never use artificial oxygen nor wear an oxygen mask as that would upset the normal o2/co2 balance, compromise the integrity of my system and probably hasten my death.

It is important to note that over-breathing, i.e. forcing more oxygen into the system than what is optimal, reduces the vital exchange of o2 with co2 at the cellular level, and therefore starves the cells of oxygen. When that continues indefinitely, people die, which is why 90% of the people force intubated against their will in hospitals don't survive, not because of any disease, but because their cells were starved by the imbalance of o2/co2, and probably by the addition of antibiotics.

5 reasons why too much oxygen is not good <--

I've seen these specialised devices in use in someone's home and in use regarding some of my relatives, including similar in hospitals. I don't doubt they are accurate and I would expect them to be. I would also expect them to be of a significant cost to manufacture. The only concern I would have regarding the OP is that it was mentioned he has a Samsung smartwatch with a Samsung phone to do the same thing. Or at least that's how it comes across, unless I've missed something?

Obviously, then I can't help wondering how accurate a smartwatch might be compared to a dedicated device for measuring oxygen as used in hospitals and given for use in people's homes. My concern would then be the worry of what could be an inaccurate measurement of a smartwatch and how that then might cause unnecessary worry in the person using the smartwatch. If any relative of mine was using a smartwatch for this purpose I would like to think they would go to a GP or similar to confirm using a dedicated device.

My doctor accepts all my Samsung smart watch readings. He also told me that too much Oxygen will do no damage. However, why waste unnecessary Oxygen. It costs money. No prescription is required. I ordered mine from Amazon and will start using it next week after I receive the Oxygen mask. I have an MD or NP visiting me every 2 months. I am on the Home Visit Program of the Geriatric Dept. of my local hospital. I was already in Vitas Hospice for 3 weeks in October, 2018. My Primary at that time thought I was dying in her office and told me to either go to the emergency room of my local hospital or she would refer me to hospice which option I took then.

I now am being treated by a Geriatrician.

My Samsung smart watch measures oxygen 24/7 since I only take it off when I take showers. It also measure steps I walk every day. I try to walk two workouts per day of 2,000 steps, each, to prevent dying from blood clots. My Dad and Grandfather both died from blood clots.

The Samsung smart watch combined with the health application on my Samsung phone track steps I walk, number of hours and minutes I sleep, body weight and blood pressure. I'd recommend it for every elderly person to keep a permanent health record to detect health problems. I copy it all into One Note every day for a complete record for my Geriatrician. It also tracks heart rate but so far have not used that record since I don't have heart problems YET.

At age 88 so far I play chess at Chess.com and Civilization VI from Steam.com to keep me busy all day since I do not work on a job. I do not read books but do listen to audio books at breakfast and dinner so my wife can also be informed. Currently I am listening to the following audio book: "The German War: A Nation Under Arms, 1939-1945; Citizens and Soldiers." It is the German view of WW II telling the reader why they fought.

That deserves a double đź‘Ťđź‘Ť

My doctor . . . . . . . . told me that too much Oxygen will do no damage.

That is false, an extremely abusive and dangerous thing to say to elderly people.
Having adequate co2 in the tissues is a requirement for proper release of oxygen to those cells.
When red blood cells sense higher levels of co2 in tissues they can then release oxygen from the blood to those cells.

When there is excessive oxygen in the blood, then too much co2 is washed out of the tissues and the cells,
thus not allowing adequate oxygen transfer. When this condition continues, the tissues die due to the lack of oxygen.

Summing up, excessive oxygen in the blood --> results in oxygen starvation in the cells and tissues of the body.

Further explanation of the Bohr Effect <-- Notice the chart which shows healthy people breathe less air / oxygen per minute, and sick people breathe excessively, which worsens and even causes their sick conditions. Sick people are actually making themselves sick by breathing too much.

This is why I haven't ever worn a mask for a virus, because maintaining my normal breathing is far more important to me.
