Panic Attack - Self Help, Does It Work For You?

If you really want to know then maybe this will help:

Those who have them can face plenty of scorn and distrust about them from themselves. Facing up to it can be hard. We're all supposed to be stronger than that, right?

I got roped into a men's group meeting a little while back. It wasn't my "thing" so for whatever reason (maybe my attitude) it didn't help me much. But there were some "tough guys" there: a former fireman, a former U.S. Marine.

Panic attacks don't seem to be related to physical injury or pain. Often they don't have have any recognizable triggers.

I don't know. It may just be one of those things where "you have to be there" to understand.

I have panic attacks if I have to go shopping or be around a lot of people, sit in a crowded Dr's office, etc. It's so bad that it gives me instant diarrhea, every time. Because of that, I carry a cooler with apple cider vinegar drinks in it. I'll sip it before I go and while I'm driving. That calms my stomach and gastro issues at least. The VA wanted to give me heart meds for it to lower my heart rate. That was a disaster so i stopped that. Rather just use breathing techniques and sip my ACV. Works better for me.

I sure don't have the answers. I wish I did. If you have something that helps, that's great!

But I'm not competent to approve or recommend self-treatments. I limit my suggestions to behavioral self help mainly from professionals. I don't want to see anyone harmed.

By the way, don't forget that advice isn't "absolute." What works for one person might not for you, or it even might make you feel worse!

For example I've found lots of suggestions about lavender, lavender oil, maybe everything but "lavender bread." :ROFLMAO: But for me lavender brings feelings of claustrophobia unlike nearly every other strong scent. Not so much in normal proportions, but massaging the diluted essential oil into my scalp as suggested sounds like a nightmare.

Eating some dark chocolate is another thing I've heard. Sounds bogus to me, but it probably can't hurt... unless you really dislike the flavor.

Those kinds of minor "layman's interventions" probably can't hurt. Just feel free to skip the ones that do not work for you.

For some people mild over the counter decongestants might help if nasal congestion is involved in your panic discomfort. But note that they rank high on the list of medications that can worsen anxiety symptoms. This sort of thing probably needs professional medical advice.
